hi I'm new to this, but can you help me I just bought a 1998 dt50 and it's a little cracker!

I have a problem in that it is smoking excessively, it was fine when I bought it and tested it. I noticed that the oil in the gearbox was low so I got some oil and topped it up and now the bike is smoking badly.

Can anyone help and give some idea what the problem is and how to fix it.

:? thanks

ooo i had one of those, nice little bikes they are. what 2t oil are ya using in the engine? also does it constantly smoke even when warm or does it smoke less when warmer? where do you fill up your petrol and what type do you use?

Skyline's got a good point I think.

2 stroke engines do smoke and the less you use them the more they smoke.

Using a cheaper mineral based oil like valvoline will make the bike smoke a lot but the smell will not be the same as engine oil.

Unless you think it's gutless then it's probably the 2 T oil.

Is it really really bad or is it just that you notice it?

Did you add ATF to the gearbox?....or 2-stroke oil to the resevoir?

It could be a dodgy crank seal, leaking gearbox oil into the crankcase :?

Thanks to you all for your advice we have fixed the problem it was a case of too much oil in the gearbox. when we drained it and refilled it with less oil the problem went away.
