Joeleol Posted September 14, 2010 Posted September 14, 2010 Hello all, Just needing a bit of help, I am making a super simple custom loom for my XS250 and I was just trying to work out what the wires coming out of the stator do. There are 4 coming off of the outer coils and 2 coming off of the inner. Would anyone mind explaining what all of these do? Regards, Joel
Moderator drewpy Posted September 14, 2010 Moderator Posted September 14, 2010 white ones are the outputs to the rectifier (stator) and the 2 wires are the regulated 12v input to field coil via the voltage regulator.
Joeleol Posted September 14, 2010 Author Posted September 14, 2010 Thanks drewp! I have a haynes book of lies and it was just that it shows 4 white wires coming from the alternator and then a black and a green coming from the inner coil. So what I have realised from the book is that one of the white wires is not used (not know which one, does it matter?)? the other 3 go to the rectifier and then straight on to the battery. As for the two coming from the inner coil (Green and black I think) I think that the black goes to ground and the green goes to the regulator and then on to all the electrical components other than the starter motor. Does this sound about right to you? Regards, Joel
Moderator drewpy Posted September 15, 2010 Moderator Posted September 15, 2010 on the schematic, one of the white wires eminates from the middle of the stator, that one is not used. black is the negative part of the voltage reg, green the output to the feild coil and brown supply to the voltage regulator.
Joeleol Posted September 15, 2010 Author Posted September 15, 2010 hmm this is very confusing, sorry to be a pain but that doesn't make too much sense to me? There are 4 whites, one of which is not used (how on earth do I find the centre one?) and secondly there are only two other wires (Green and Brown) do I use these how you said?
Moderator Airhead Posted September 15, 2010 Moderator Posted September 15, 2010 Try measuring resistance to chassis, the 3 stator coils will be the same and the one confusing white will be something completely different, may even be open cct I dont know...just guessing from what i have just read.
Joeleol Posted September 15, 2010 Author Posted September 15, 2010 Ok, Ill try this, hopefully it will give me an answer. If not I'll let you know, motorcycle wiring is a joke compared to cars =P
Saltus Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Measure AC current on running bike between the pairs of white wires - 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 1-4, etc. At idle it should be about 15v AC. The fourth wire is for diagnostic only (resistance) and there will be no current between him and rest.
Joeleol Posted September 17, 2010 Author Posted September 17, 2010 Ahh thank you very much saltus! Much appreciated!
Joeleol Posted September 19, 2010 Author Posted September 19, 2010 Ok, So I checked the resistance between all four while cables, If i leave one of them out completely (Whatever you connect this one to reads 1ohm) When I check resistance any of the remaining three in any order I get 0.6ohms. Should I ommit the one that always reads 1ohm?
