Hello all, new Yamaha Enduro owner here. A couple of weeks ago I bought a 1975 DT175B from someone for $250, and considering everything mechanical and engine wise checked out great, even the engine is in top shape, I would say thats a steal. It is all titled and registered and ready to go, except one small detail: the brake light.

The only real "problems" with this bike is that it is a little beat up, missing some paint here and there, pretty dirty, and of course the brake light does not work. The bike starts and runs fine, the headlight even works, but the brake light is a no go. Now, another issue is the killswitch/lights and blinkers thumb controls are totally trashed, not working at the moment. Beyond changing the bulb and checking all the wiring to make sure its all plugged in Im pretty amateur at this so thats as far as i got before I decided to start Googling. For some reason I have a hunch that I need to replace the thumb controls, not just to replace them and have working controls, but also in order to get that brake light working. Any help here is much appreciated.

Hi and welcome :D

As far as I know thr brakelight works from the battery and so...you need a good battery!

Also the horn works from said battery so this can be used to determine the battery is good.

Unplug the two connectors to the brake switch and check the switch operates using a multi meter.

Check the bulb filament using a multimeter.

check that battery voltage appears in the bulb housing when brake pedal is pressed.

Oh and dont forget there is a long thread and adjusting nut on the brake switch...it might just need adjusting after all. Try pulling the actuater down by hand to test.

Thanks for the heads up. Grabbed a multimeter and found no volts were heading out of the hand control to the brake light. Replaced the hand control, everything is working great! I even can turn brights on and off lol. Any suggestions on how to get a brighter light back there though? Standard bulb seems a little dim.
