Hi out there, I have a 1982 XJ 650 Maxim, I am unable to get the locking gas cap to unlock and am looking for some more ideas on how to reslove this. It will turn about an 1/8 of a turn and then stops. I am afraid to try and turn any harder than I have. Made sure I was pushing down on the cap while trying this too. It acts like the locking pins itself is froze up. Not sure and out of things to try. Thanks in advance for your helpful ideas.

tumblers have moved, try wiggling the key and turning at the same time.

you will have to get a new one (I would) so try different keys and eventually you may have to break it.

The tumbler (single) has several pins or wafers in it, which will have collected dirt, rust or general crap.

Ideally air-dust it out with a compressed air spray and then lube with graphite powder or (if you have to) WD40.

Work this into the lock using the key.
