I need some wisdom and figured this was the place! My '06 650 Classic has been garaged all winter and high and dry. I charged the battery and then started her up. But every time I go to close the choke a bit, after the bike seems warm, it shuts down-like it's not getting gas. I checked everything I can think of: air cleaner, etc. and took everything apart looking for mice nests etc. -none of that. It's also making a kind of mechanical "clicking" noise when I turn the key. Almost like you would hear with a car that has a dead battery, but the bike starts. It just won't keep running without the choke wide open. I shot a phone video to get the sound and will send it along to anyone who would like to take a shot at diagnosing. I'm baffled and so is my friend who is pretty good with bikes. It's almost like a fuel pump, but I don't think the bike has pump (thus the choke, right?). Ideas? and thanks for taking a look at my post.

The clicking when you turn the key is the fuel pump.

It should stop after a few second when the carb is full. If you tun the key but forget to switch the petrol on it will 'click' for England. Yes I've done it.

Have you riden it to get it warm or just on the stand - it might not be warm enough.

Try new petrol too.

How long are you letting it warm up?

I give mine a good minute, every single morning. I take that minute to go round, giving it the POWER check:

Petrol

Oil

Water

Electrics

Rubber

Or, in the case of Cruisers, W = Weather

Some Winters, I also turn the idle up just a touch, depending on how cold it is that year.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to try some things this weekend. I'm letting it warm up for more than a minute on the stand and the gas is "on". I am going to add some "new gas" and maybe try some carb cleaner. Will keep you posted! I welcome all suggestions!

Possibly a blocked pilot jet in the carb, It may clear itself but I suspect you are going to have to do it.
