So I bought the bike with the crankcase and associated covers painted black. No bueno. I have since picked up an unpainted crankcase and all needed covers, unpainted. But they're all filthy, not to mention, my heads are very dirty as well. Any recommendations for cleaning said parts? Drewpy- how did you get your restored XS to look so perfect? (she's a beaut by the way!) Was the engine painted after cleaning? If so, what paint?

Thanks all!

the crankcase was stripped and ....aherm washed in the dish washer!! then rinsed well to stop it going black ( don;t use any wash powder) I painted it with this new engine paint, but its rubbish as it didn't resist petrol even after curing in the oven! If you can, get yamaha silver PJ1 paint its no longer made but you my get some lying around. do exactly what it says on the tin!!

the heads was ceramic cleaned by this guy HERE as he lives down the road
