mojobird70 Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Greetings, The question below pertains to my 1982 XS400 Maxim. The bike was running fine the last time it was used so I'm thinking there's something stuck in the fuel system. Was curious if someone could provide some suggestions after pondering the following symptoms: Bike sat for ~3 months without being fired Got the bike to warm up but, oddly, the motor will idle very high (3-4k) when the choke is 'off' and the idle will come back down to something more normal when the choke is engaged. Basically the opposite behavior from what you'd expect. I don't believe there's kinking or snagging in the throttle cable as throttle operation seems pretty snappy still. Is it possible the float needle is stuck? Or could the throttle needle have popped out of its jet? I'm not sure if I'd be able to tell if one or both of the cylinders are affected...however, it seems like both cylinders are behaving this way. Thanks much!
kishan Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 your idel rev valve just needs adjusting to the revs are not soo high.

If the bike was going good before it was parked up and it was idleing ok then. Fuel, when left undisturbed for long perionds of time tends to go off a bit, so it is possible that the fuel in the carb has got a little sticky. If you can manage to start it and get it warmed up then I think if you get some new fuel in there and start using the bike a bit the prob might go away. The float needle could be stuck but I dout if the throttle needle has jumped out of its jet. There could be some sticking of the throttle needle making it not close all the way down, hence the high revs when warmed up. Also make sure the choke is working propperly and not stuck half on r something. If new fuel and a bit of use doesnt sort it out then I suggest you take the carb off for a full cleaning. Hope this helps !!!
