Have you tried a Yam dealer?

Also if the locks aren't damaged, if you can get the barrel out you could take it to a locksmith and get a key made for the lock.

Failing that scrap/breakers yards etc

Or, if you'd used the Search function, you'd have found one of the many topics where I speak about the cheapest option of dealing with a Locksmith.

They can cut keys cheaper than anyone else, even electronic coded keys.

They can re-pin locks, replace cylinders, re-pin and re-key, put in brand new pins, unstick dirt-frozen locks... many things.

Hopefully the locksmith can cut the key as mentioned above, or re-pin the cylinder - though my local locksmith said he couldn't re-pin the cylinder as he didn't have the pins...

Got two keys cut by my local locksmith for my XVS1300 saddlebags 2 weeks ago which cost £10 (shame he couldn't re-pin the bags as have a key for ignition and seperate one for bags)

So how come you have different locks for the bags?

Did they come like that? Were they aftermarket add-ons?

As I mentioned, a decent Locksmith, particularly one who specialises in Autos* will be able to repin any pin tumbler lock.

If he simply doesn't have the right sort of pins in stock, fair enough.

I'd have asked if he could get a set off someone else, but that's me - I have a bit of involvement in the trade. The other option is to shop around, state clearly what it is you want and everything you want in advance, get price estimates, quotes on viewing the work etc. Many will do this bit for free anyway.

Another pointer is to remove the lock assembly yourself, if you can - These guys work on locks. They don't like fiddling about with the rest of a vehicle, if they can help it. ;)

*Dunno why we don't call them vehicle locksmiths over here....

Hi Ttaskmaster,

I got the saddlebags from the US (ebay) - they were from a dealer who said a customer bought a new tourer version of the 1300 but said he didn't want the bags. Got them for about £650 delivered (instead of what was £899 over here, now £920). Only thing was the dealer didn't say that they didn't have any keys in the add (though he was offering a new lockset for $80).

I agree entirely that a decent locksmith could. I went to my local locksmith and he made the key for the bags (am all for supporting local guys). But when I collected the barrels/keys + asked if he would be able to re-pin them + he was quite abrupt and didn't seem at all interested. I figured either he can't get the pins or doesn't want my cash?

I used to work in a locksmiths years ago so I might go back to that shop and ask the fellas in there if they can re-pin (if not I'll ask them or my local bike shop for an decent auto locksmith).

I can buy a new lock set from Yammy for £80 - it'll put the bags + sissy bar on the same locks but would rather have bags & ignition on same key (don't care about sissy bar lock as won't be taking that off when I'm out and about).

Incidently, 4th Jan I bought saddle guards for my 1300 at a cost of approx £180, Yamaha have just increased their prices & according to their website these are now a whopping £299!!!!!! That's some BIG hike even taking into account new VAT rates! (maybe it's supposed to say £199?)

Locksmith or key-cutter?

Big difference.

Most actual locksmiths, even the less reputable ones, can re-pin a lock if you remove it for them.

Yamaha might have designed teh bags so you can't remove the cylinders. I'd have to see.

However, phone a few of the local independents. I'm certain you can get everything set up for the one key.

As for Yamaha's prices.... F**K ME!!!!!

I can't believe that - £300 for a pair of bent metal rods??!!

Get the kids at the local tech college to do that for much cheaper, probably with better quality too... or is it all about keeping the warranty valid?

He reckoned he was a locksmith but not convinced... will look around + post how much it costs in the end (barrels only held in by two allen bolts so easy to remove)

Not sure Yamaha stuff are about warranty - just no-one seems to make aftermarket ones yet. I reckon it would be cheaper to have them made + chrome plated (or even sprayed matt black to match bags & frames). Will post a pic of them when I get round to install.

He reckoned he was a locksmith but not convinced...

Then he probably wasn't.

If he has a shop then he likely won't be.

If he's self-employed and has a van full of kit, mobile cutting machine, tools, spare blanks, spare locks etc then maybe.

Just check through the Yellow Pages and find ones with smaller ads.

Stay away from the big National companies as you'll be seriously overcharged.

You can buy locks for any yamaha bike from global yamaha lock suppliers. You can easily find some ignition switch and fuel tank lock sets from various online retailers. Although, it would be best to always confirm from a EDIT DDT: SPAM LINK REMOVED on which lock set would be appropriate for your bike and where to buy it from
