hey peeps

just been outside to start the DT up and make sure everything is fine, ended up getting the twitches and had to grab my helmet (giggity) and take it for a spin, got back and decided to give the (new) swingarm a scrub down to remove a bit of the salt and sh*t from the roads, noticed that although the new swingarm has only been on for a month or two its already going rusty, and when i scrubbed the rust off the paint also came off with it.

now rather than take the swingarm off and respray it every couple of months would it be possible to powdercoat it for a bit more protection?, ive already had one swingarm rust through in a year and replacements are getting harder to find, so does anyone know where i can get powdercoating done, at what price and would it be possible to do a DIY jobby?

triple-s charge £69 for frame and free swing arm, no VAT. but that's a ways from you. It'll give you an idea of costs by clicking on "prices"

I recon you'll get charged £30 for the swingarm alone somwhere else.

always take it to a bike/car powder coater, I've had a test piece done by a powder coaters in stalybridge ( staly-casino)who do gates and eveything metal and it was a Crappy orange peel and it wasn't propery prepared. To rub it in it also cost £20 about 4 years ago!! :o

I'd be wary of powdercoating, when i was doing the landrover trials powder coat looks pretty when its new but once its damaged water can get under it and there is no real way to patch it pretty.

It also wont stop it rotting out from the inside.

Try galv, so long as you use the proper primer you can still paint it up nice.

+1 not a fan of it either, have had it done 3 times on the DT but never again, when it chips water gets under and creeps and rots from within, I have a patch to 'deal with' on mine, like the aerosol galv idea. ;)

there is a powder coaters who have a 7 year guarantee and the part is galvanised first, an't think of them off hand, but I'm sure they are in CMM!

Maldon Coaters in Essex use the zinc base coat system. I've had an XS650 and the frame is a good now as it was 15 years ago when I had it coated. Stone chips can simply be touched up with paint to stop water ingress. I takes a fair bit to chip the coating though.

The biggest problem is masking up. Powder coating adds considerable thickness and is a complete bitch to remove. I machine up my own blanks to go into swingarm pivots and all other dimension sensitive item. I put nuts and bolts on threaded items as well. It takes a long time, but believe me it takes a hell of a lot longer to try and get the coating off threads etc. Turn up at a powder coaters and just sling the parts at them, as removed from the bike at your own peril!
