CraigDayna
After 20 years of non bike existance I bought an XJ600 pre-div (1990). The engine's good and I rode it half a mile round our estate before smokey heat started pouring out from under the tank - and then it packed in again. It turned out to be a manky coil. I've been all round the houses on ebay for several weeks with people sending me wrong bits and having only an hour a week to find out they don't fit, going mental as I scour the pages yet again. Anyway I now have working coils that 'look' like the ones in the Haynes (Thanks Haynes for the complete lack of part numbers). However, it struggles to start and there still seems to be a very weak spark at the plug. The fuel line is good and the carbs are great. Could the electronic ignition be on its way out? - or is that an 'all works' or 'nothing works' kind of part. I'm reluctant to go through this performance again with these costing a bomb. I just want to ride the damn bike and this isn't much fun anymore. Can anyone help? Please??
Moderator drewpy Posted November 1, 2009 Moderator Share Posted November 1, 2009 i'd look at the battery as these have a short life. you may get 12v but its the amps you need. best way to check its taking a charge, is to rev the bike at 3k and put a multimeter on the battery terminals. you should be getting 13 to 14 half volts!! other than that there is a charging issue or the battery is kaputt! Cheers drewpy, I'll give that a go. Tried some new plugs today and the spark seems a bit happier but the battery does loose charge quickly. Just seen a kink in the fuel pipe that will probably be starving it. getting there! Thanks for your help.
