My XV only produces a single strong click on pushing the starter. The battery seems to be fine with over 12V when tested with the multimeter, the bike also bump starts fine. The connection to the starter just over 12V when the button is pressed, so I have come to the conclusion that the starter is dead. They look similar, but are they actually the same unit? as a poor student I'm hoping so!
