Will a Yam dealer buy my bike if I'm not p/xing it?

Just curious as I'm selling my YBR125 at the moment and have advertised it in a few places. However, I was wondering if a dealer would buy it even if I wasn't trying to buy one off them? I realise they'd only offer me crappy trade prices but this may give me more flexibility to buy a bike privately since there are much better deals out there to be made on private sales at the mo (if buying used).

Hi,

I would guess so .. 20 years ago it was good to buy a tidy bike at basic trade .... Skellerns in Worcester do advertise a buy in scheme

Thanks Jim, will do a wee bit of phoning next week. I have seen a 1999 Fazer which I intend getting a p/x price on, but am afraid he'll quote me silly money so would like to keep my options open

Unfortunately not - yet! I figured that for my first big bike, I'd best go cheap so I don't end up crying when/if I drop it. In addition, I had an car accident in December, which has resulted in a claim against my hubby's car insurance. The claim hasn't been sorted yet, but is likely to end up as a "fault" claim against me so I can't really afford to be insuring a newer bike, given that an estimate on a nearly new one came up around the £600-£800 mark (fully comp)before I had the accident.

Cheapest MT-03 I can find are around the £3k (or slightly under) mark and I want to spend around £2k with my insurance on top.

When I get a bit more experience riding (and I know that passing the test doesn't make me a good rider) I'll look again at getting a MT-03 or perhaps a new Diversion as these took my fancy recently. I'm so fickle

Hi Exile.

Most main dealers will off-load 2nd hand bikes (apart from pristine low miles nearly-new machines) to another bike shop that specialises in second hand. But yeah, expect an insulting price from them!

If I was you, I'd get an advert up at the local bike (CBT?) riding schools, someone there will want your bike for a while for a bit of experience. The school might even buy it!

I'm sure you realise that you'll get the best money for it selling privately, but I'll mention it to be sure.

For 2K you'll get a 12-15K miles 2002 Mark 2 Fazer 600, or thereabouts.

Check out the Fazers Owners Club if you're keen - there are a few mint 2003 machines (mark 2 again, less than 10K miles) surfacing for about £2300 at the moment.

The Fazer is a cracking bike, btw. I've had mine 6 years, out to play today and in 20yrs riding it's the best I've owned (and suited to my 'style' and needs). Plenty of power and great handling, good brakes and decent tank range.

I do like the MT-03s too, if I had the money I'd get one too for hooning about on.

Paul

Sorry to hear about that but I can understand not to drop K's down the road ... so happy hunting

Hi Paul,

the same could be said of the XJ600s (apart from the price being lower) or in fact the 900 (insurance may knock the 900 out but in saying that may 900 is insured F.C for £97 ... a small case for being old ?). So perhaps a broad spectrum of bikes need to be looked at in this case ?

Jim,

absolutely, consider more machines - I just picked up on this post on the YBR sale item, I've no idea what Ulster Exile wants to do (distance/fun/commute etc).

I've ridden an XJ600 (borrowed one for a fortnight once some years ago) - found it on the top-heavy side.

Unless a lady would be about 5'8" or more, an XJ600 (and perhaps even a Fazer 600) might be a little bit of a handful with a full tank for manoeuvering around a yard - these bikes are more on the top-heavy side than many other (including bigger) machines.

I've not ridden the XJ900 (fancied one once, thanks to the shaft drive) so not really in a position to comment on that.

Currently running the FZS600, a GPX600 and XZ550.

FZS600 sunny weather A and B roads, use the GPX for B roads/back road spins as it's centre of gravity is much lower and you sit in the bike, rather than on it - more fun on the roads I'd not want to tip-toe about on the (mint) Fazer for fear of losing it on the gravel. GPX is worth a lot less, and it's not so far to fall!

XZ550 is just a slogger, can be fun when the revs are up and it's got a trailing front axle which gives interesting quicker steering than one might expect.

I'm only 5'6" myself, 29" inside leg and found my ZZR1100 easier to balance on and move around than the Fazer - a lot of bigger bikes (not counting cruisers) are better suited to shortarses like myself.

Thanks for the advice both.

I visited my instructor this morning with the box of beer I promised him, but he wasn't there so didn't get the chance to ask about the advert as I was advised to do this. I may head back there tomorrow.

As for the FOC - I've seen some of the ones on offer, especially that bloke from Spain *groans* what a deal!!! This is why i'd rather get rid of the bike first even at trade prices, instead of p/xing it, simply because I feel like I'm taking two hits if I p/x (the trade in price and the price of the bike I'm buying).

I have advertised this bike everywhere I can think of - forums, MCN, autotrader, gumtree, preloved.com, pistonheads. You name it, I've advertised it (apart from here, but I reckon that everybody on here will be on here because they already own a Yam and they won't be looking a 125!). I haven't given it a huge amount of time so far (only a week) but I would have expect a hint of interest from someone given the exposure I have given it - it's in pretty good nick too and not overpriced imho compared to the others on the market. This is why I'm considering my other options especially since I've a hubby with his first big bike big dying to get out there an enjoy it with me.

Incidentally, although i feel like a traitor saying it on here, I also really like the Hornet S and have seen a couple excellently priced ones on private sale so would consider those too, if I can get rid of my bike.

Oops didn't see your later comments (watching a recording of the Ireland match).

I'm 5'4" with a 29" leg. Ruled out the Bandit as it's too heavy for me. Hornet feels comfy to be honest. Fazer is ok but would need the seat scooped for me to feel 100% ok. I wanted a 600-ish cc and semi-faired as I can see me doing a wee bit of travelling.

Have seen a 2001 Hornet s for £1990 and 6.6k miles to give an example of a private sale on those and similar to the FOC prices on private sale for 02/03 model Fazers. Dealer prices are silly compared to those!

There are probably a couple of scooped-out fazer seats kicking about somewhere on the FOC-U board, a wanted advert there should yield results - and GerryMoore's machine is a bargain at 2200 even with 2 owners.

Deefer666 gets bits and bobs frequently, I'd try him too.

FYI: I've just had an annual service and MOT for mine for £145 at George Whites...

Hornet - good bike, good pedigree engine - seem to remember something about a feeble tank range (I might be thinking of the 900, my memory isn't the best on the planet).

Have you considered an SV650S? Again, one for the ladies and shorter fellas, and great handling.

(Another of my 'if I had more money than I needed' bikes, although I do find a little too much weight on my wrists on them).

Hornet has a 16 litre tank...

Cheers for the heads up on the seat though - if I end up with a Fazer, you'll see me on the forum ;)

As for the SV650s - no can do. My other requirement is seat position - I have carpel tunnel so too much strain on my wrists leave me with pain and numbness in my hands. I basically need as upright a position as I can get and the SV650 naked felt uncomfortable, so the SV650s wouldn't do at all, which is a shame, because these are cheaper and there are more low mileage versions out there!

My (now Ex-) girlfriend got her test the year before last.

I bought a damaged GPZ500S and put it on the road for her - she still has it (fancies an MT-03!) and has eyed up my fazer but she hasn't quite got the upper body strength (in my opinion) to manoeuvre it around, so I've not let her near it!

Lady in question is 5'6", 29" inside leg too.

500s is a decent wee machine, especially the later ones (get a D model with twin disc front wheel and disc rear brake) - prices are VERY good too. 'Only' 60 horsepower, but light and decent handling machines. Again, good for ladies and vertically-challenged fellas - had one myself about 10 years ago (and a GPZ1000X at the same time).

(I've been mainly kawasaki through the years, as the list below shows).

£1800 will get a good low mileage version, half-fairing and belly pan... have a look?

Way ahead of you! Saw one of these today when I went to look at a Hornet. Not a fan tbh although the one on offer was tidy but not in the best nick...the place i went to had mainly old bikes - a do-er uppers dream!

Thank you for the suggestion though :D
