RE: Rust on exhaust

Bike: Yamaha DT 125 RE (2006 reg).

As many of you already know the exhaust (front and end pipe) on a DT 125 can rust very quickly. When I bought the bike a month ago with 10.000 miles it already had some rust on the exhaust. After riding for a month it's getting much worse and becoming very ugly.

I don't wanna spend too much money on it (credit crunch LOL). How hard would it be to remove the exhaust from the bike and spray it in black with high temp exhaust paint shown in the following pages:

Perhaps I could even spray the exhaust without removing it from the bike. I would have to tape up everything around it.

Any ideas? Has anyone done it before (easy job or very hard) and will the paint actually last or just rust up again. :unsure:

If it all goes well later on i may consider buying a full DEP exhaust, which is very expensive from what i have found in the following pages.

I recently resprayed the exhaust (link section and cans) off my xj600. I removed it from the bike and had it shot blasted clean to take off all the rust and the old finish (cost 25 quid at a local place that specialises in this type of cleaning process). This is very important, as vht paint is not designed to cover rust. The better the surface prep, the better the final result. I handled the exhaust with rubber gloves after it was cleaned, and rubbed it down with carb cleaner to remove all traces of dust etc. Used a can of Halfords own paint per silencer and it went on dead easily. Just build it up in a few coats leaving 15 mins between them.

Not sure how it'll hold up in the long run, but good surface prep gives it the best chance of lasting.

The problem with DT's is they are designed as an off road bike and so have a high front mudguard, this gives the bike the right look but does absolutely no favours to the hot exhaust that is getting sprayed with cold water, the net effact of all this is a steady rust buidd up starting at the downpipe and working steadily towards the expansion chamber.

The only answer is a regular wipe down to keep it clean and I'm afraid, regular removal of the pipe for a qiick touch up spray.

I recommend using Plasti-Kote barbecue paint available from Wilkinsons stores, because it looks good, stands the heat well and is far cheaper than paints that are sold for motor vehicles.

But like I said it wont last, none of them do...so look to keeping on top of it. ;)

Cheers guys. Your help is much appreciated. Any idea how long it could take me to remove the exhaust? The last thing i want is not to be able to put it back.

I don't know any places which would be able to remove the rust for me. Any advice how i should remove the rust? Can I paint over the rust using the Plasti-Kote barbecue paint ?

Oldgitonabike - The exhaust on the picture looks perfect. Hope to get mine to that standard.

Its simple .. u got a socket set. spanners . start wi the muffler . then slacken under seat [bolts] WD 40 THE FRONT TWO

nuts [at cylnder] s wen all fixings are removed ", slide pipe forward & out.

Now dont paint on top of rust & bumps. Rub it down [ wet&dry sand paper] 180 grade first . to take off the worst . then 400 grade to realy flatten the surface. [ i did this watchn the tele] but u need covers down , & wear gloves coz its black as fuck stoor [dust] the add coats of paint[ wear a mask] it"l take a couple o" nights ;)

Yep, remove the exhaust starting with the tail pipe, rub it down yourself to the standard that youre happy with, then clean it all off with a rag dosed in white spirit, and hang it up and allow to dry off (white spirit) before spraying, wear latex or similar surgical gloves to keep the oils from your skin away from the surface.

So I should just use sand paper, no rust removing products? A bit of a silly question but if i sand too much it could be damaging the pipe by making the metal layer thinner right?

I think I might attempt this over a Saturday and Sunday. I think i'll manage to take out the exhaust with not much hassle...problem might be putting it back to together.

You could try Jenolite, its and acid based rust remover, follow the instructions and recautions properly, its not compusary though, you could just rub it down or even use one of those dremel gadgets or the cheap but good alternatives that Aldi sell from time to time, you wont do much damage, dont think that you'll wear it away, dont try to get every mark off, it will still look good painted

Dont forget you will need to buy a new exhaust gasket and replace the old one each time you re fit the pipe

The gaskets crush as they seal so they should technically be rellaced with each re fit, although i must admit i've re used them before though i do not recommend it, like you say they are cheap so keep a few in stock.

As for paint, I have already said about my opinions, if you want to pay more or if you dont have a Wilkinsons, then buy from Halfords or the like
