phanteh
Hello! I recently bought an XJ600 Diversion off ebay for £250... Bargain! Bit of work got it MOT'd etc and it ran beautifully... for about 1000 miles. Now the motor is currently sat in peices awaiting a new conrod and some other bits Anyway, I picked up a Cat C write-off with an engine that'd done around 10,000 miles so we decided to stick it in my bike and see if it works. We got the engine running with little trouble, but as soon as it started running, we got fuel coming out of the carb breathers / overflow tubes and we've no idea why. The Fuel pump (electric) and the carbs are from the original bike, literally the only thing we've done is switch the engine out. I'm pretty sure all the wiring is as it should be and the engine runs without any strange noises - the exhausts were both blowing equally as well so I don't think it's a blockage. Not having a lot of experience with these bikes, or fuel pumps for that matter, we're at a loss. Any pointers or help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers Ross
Moderator Airhead Posted October 18, 2008 Moderator Share Posted October 18, 2008 Its a four cylinder isnt it? How many carbs are overflowing, surely not all of them at once?
phanteh
Yeah, four cylinders. If you have a look at part no 37 of this picture - I believe these are the breather tubes that usually just sit under the airbox. We're only getting fuel out of the left one, but I think that's due to the bike being on it's side stand. Currently at work so I'm unable to check anything tonight... I'll be sure to see if it comes out of both when upright. Cheers

Cheers I have no experience of this bike but from what i understand you said is that only one carb is overflowing, are they overflow pipes in which case the dont connect to anything at the other end? phanteh
That's right, the pipes just sit under the airbox, they don't connect to anything. We're just trying to figure out why the carbs are overflowing - the pump is the same, the carbs are the same... The connectors should prevent the fuel pump from being incorrectly wired... We're stumped!
Moderator Airhead Posted October 18, 2008 Moderator Share Posted October 18, 2008 I'm stumped too at the moment, i dont think they are overflow pipes, you wouldnt expect petrol to be overflowing somewhere high up on the bike, that might be dangerous fire hazard, so they could be breathers which are there to keep the float bowls at atmospheric pressure. Have you got the rest of the info for that drawing, the bit that says what the parts actually are?
phanteh
Here you go! Cheers
Moderator Airhead Posted October 18, 2008 Moderator Share Posted October 18, 2008 Here you go! Cheers Hmm they only call it a hose!!, not very descriptive that eh? Ok if you have an overflow problem then the fuel needle valve in one of those carbs that are connected to the "Hose" must be passing. Can you detach the "Hose" from the carbs? and then you will see which of the carbs has a problem.
phanteh
Hmm, It's possible the carbs have seized up I guess, they've been drained of fuel and left outside along with the chassis since we took the engine out (thinking we had everything that'd need replacing ). Thanks for your help - I'll be sure to post tomorrow once I've had a chance to look at the carbs! Cheers
Moderator Cynic Posted October 18, 2008 Moderator Share Posted October 18, 2008 They are vents for the float chambers, our suzukis have the same system OG but ours go over the airbox... Probably a stuck float from where they have been jiggled about fitting them.
phanteh
Thanks for your help guys! Turns out it was a stuck float - couple of bangs to the back of the carbs with a rubber mallet did the trick! Cheers again
