Posted September 23, 200816 yr I'm looking to but a Yamaha XJ600. The one I've seen is very tidy (1999) and has fairly low miles on the clock, 28,000. The owner tells me that it has a small oil leak from the airbox (?). What could be the cause and would it be expensive to sort?
September 23, 200816 yr Although ive never seen this on a bike, I watched charley boorman ireland to sydney by any means they had an oil leak in their airbox, turned out to just be a crappy seal find a manual or speak to yamaha im sure theyll know the exact problem, a new seal/gasket wont cost the earth! Try Keys Brothers, they specialise in Yamahas and are helping me with my xs250 01903 236842

September 23, 200816 yr hi, there is a pipe that runs from the rocker cover to the airbox, its the breather for the motor ,idear is ,any oil mist is burt with the petrol ,it some times there is more oil mist than the motor can take in so this usually settles in the bottom of the airbox, then it will run out through any gap it can find,so give the airbox a good clean and keep an eye on it,if it gets worse then there could be a another prob, but that is very unlikely Parsley

Have done some further research on the net and found that quite often the wider of the two breather hoses gets blocked or kinked leaving just the narrow hose to do the job. Apparently it's not up to it and the best thing to do is to replace it with a short section of braided hosepipe. Seems to make sense to me so unless there are any other obvious faults with the bike I'll snap the little bad boy up. John.
October 4, 200816 yr Hi I have a 99 xj600n which had the same problem there is a yamaha mod for the breather system which does away with the small pipe from the rocker cover and replaces the large pipe from the crank case the kit has all the unions clips and rocker cover bolt and instructions takes about half an hour to fit it cost 39 euros inc p+p from www.cmsnl.com hopefully that sorts the problem out.
