When the OIL level is very much low, the friction is up so u will feel like bike is loosing power..check oil levels regularly.

If rings are worn out the compression would be low..and power will go down, you should check if plugs are wet with oil.There may be misfiring or the plugs would blow away.

If plugs arent firing right then you will smell unburnt fuel.

Check if the oil is being pumped by the pump. If not probably the plastic wheel of the pump may have worn out.

If you didnt play with timing, then I dont think there is an issue with it.

Check if your TCI working properly. I remember there was a post regarding a TCI fix someone had done cos he had only one cylinder firing. Try cleaning connectors from TCI..

Just bought a '97 Virago 535, having previously owned a Triumph Trophy 900 it took me a motorway trip to realise that this machine is very underpowered, and Googling to find this thread makes me suspect the diaphragms. Before I spend 60 quid just getting that confirmed, can anyone point me in the direction of the Torx tool that'll fit this? As far as I can see it needs to have an indentation in the head and the Halfords ones mentioned here do not as far as I can tell. In other words there seems to be a piece sticking up in the centre of the starred bolt.

First Yamaha since my RD250LC in 1980 something....!

Scardo Welcome to the YOC, mate a picture will make it easier to help with your problem, plus of course an intro in the new members section will help as well. We get loads of one hit wonders so folk are wary of saying anything cos they get what they want then (without a THANK YOU) their gone till they need advice again. Just sayin!

Thanks Slice and appreciate the fast response, yep, thanks and will get to the new members bit - found the tool, it was just that the online picture from Halfords did not show the tool properly I think, so a visit to the store sorted it.  Now to risk springing that diaphragm......

OK so it doesn't look like the diaphragms - now I notice that it's only firing on one cylinder - trouble is, that might be because I didn't put the diaphragm back in properly, or it may have always been doing that - why didn't I check the exhaust pipes with my hand before I started fiddling? Why indeed, and this is why I should stay well clear of DIY bike repairs.

On a lighter and perhaps more useful note, Halfords are selling a 58 piece Ratchet screwdriver set including Torx bits for 15 quid, reduced at the moment.

Oh well, off to the £50 an hour garage it goes any recommendations for Brighton based mechanics?

Same problem,tops out at 55 mph but overall seems to run ok besides loss of power.i have been told the motor is about to go so i have bought a used motor to totally rebuild.

Long  old meandering thread with no real direction.
