Posted July 2, 200816 yr Ok so I'm fairly new to motorcycling, and I just bought an '83 XS 400 and found a version of the service manual. I'm wondering though, there are several different versions of the XS 400 listed in the manual: XS 400D XS 400E XS 400-2E XS 400F/2F XS 400G/SG,H So I have a few questions, the first being what is the difference between the types? And second, how do I know which type mine is (it didn't come with an owners manual)? Thanks people!

I'm not sure how exactly you tell, but when I gave my dealership the VIN #, he said it was an XS400k. Mine is also a 1983 Maxim model, so maybe yours is the same?
July 2, 200816 yr Moderator i think yours will be a 12E which is the dohc model not the sohc 's you mentioned
