Vintage Yamahas and Bloodsuckers

I spent a few days hugging some corners in western North Carolina recently when I found myself totally out ridden by a group of female motorcyclists from Seattle. It seems the gang was not as they appeared. They wore patches on the backs of their dirty leather jackets that said they were Vampires, and the quickness they showed on those twisty roads had me believing they were the real thing.

This all began after a night of camping at High Country Motorcycle Camp

( http://www.highcountrymotorcyclecamp.com/ ), located deep inside the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, I was up early to flip through some curves on what I hoped would be a deserted Blue Ridge Parkway. My 78 XS1100 is a poor curve carver; however it does stand up on the straight-aways.

After blitzing along one particular straightaway at 130 miles an hour, I began breaking for a sharp curve just in front of me on the right. Before the 500 hundred pound mass of metal between my thighs dropped to 60 mpg, I was surrounded by six vintage red Yamaha Visions. These are super motorcycles little motorcycles with 550 cc liquid cooled motors, full factory fairings and heater vents should one need relief from a chill. Most riders have only heard rumors of these bikes. On this day, their riders had long black greasy hair streaming backwards from under their helmets. I was just able to make out the vampire face on the back of their leather jackets before they slipped past me and out of sight.

Surprised by their quickness, I pulled back on the throttle of my big 1100 cc Yamaha , nearly crashing as I came out of the turn. I was able to catch up with the group in the next straightaway. Making eye contact with the group’s leader, a wink was enough to interest them in some conversation.

They told me their club travels to this remote area of the Smokey Mountains several times a year. The ride is used to initiate new members to the club and practice their riding skills. The leader invited me to join them in a future campout.

After the brief encounter, the girls quickly slipped back into their black helmets and leathers, mounted the vintage Visions and disappeared into the distance. Stupidly, I forget to get any contact information and a search of the Seattle area came up with nothing.

Even today I continue my search in this remote and gothic area of North Carolina, looking for their camp site, with the brief hope I will get just one more glimpse of those beautiful red Yamaha Visions. Let me know if you can help out !

Gotta make ya wonder why the Hell a Bike club rides all the way to the east coast from Seattle just for an Initiation ride? :blink:

Are you sure they were real and not some spiritual aperition :huh: ?

I must admit that reading the thread was more interesting than I expected. I thought it was going to be someone complaining about the big rip offs we suffer if we try to run a vintage Jap bike <_< ! Oops, got that wrong :rolleyes:

well i did wonder as i had never heard of the yamha vision, honda vision moped yes, also 130 mph on a XS1100 brave man not unobtainable maybe, but do not think anyone would want to cruise at that speed on an excess, the jota was the quickest bike around and if memory serves me correctly only did 135/140 mph, so it seems unlikely, anyhow where do i top up the oil in my engine, and what should me points be set at on my newtronics ignition on my xs750 <_<<_<<_<:lol::lol::lol:

But looking on the bright side, at least the SpamBots don't ask fucking dumb questions like "How do I oil a chain?" and "How do I put my bike on the stand?" :lol:

WTF? Why would that be worth sending? Mind you, as you highlight it's no more stupid than a lot of the crap which gets posted on here so maybe Scott and I aren't such dumbasses :lol:

Now to get down to serious stuff...

Mervin, put the oil into the holes in the top of the engine which are blocked by screw in plugs with wire leads attached. These are senors which measure how much oil is in the engine and they will tell you very quickly when you have too much! The points setting on a ignition is very sensitive and best referred to a specialist dealer, but I have found that slacking off the points and then re-setting them using a phone book as a feeler guage gives an acceptable level of performance. This is best done with your bike balanced on an orange crate (assuming the centre stand operation isn't possible for you due to it being too technical or it has been removed) which is also a very usefull aid on the XS750 model for adjusting and oiling the chain (thanks Pete for raising that topic, Mervin might have struggled to do it without good advice ;) )

Yes Andy still struggling to find the points on this newtronics thingy oh also i just got another RD 1500CC this one i see it is written on the side of the engine down by the kickstart should go well. Seriously though I did have a foreign Truck driver (Dutch i think he was) a few years ago parked beside me when i was filling the truck with fuel at taunton services, he pulled the engine oil dipstick out looked at it, went into the shop bought some oil came out looked under the bonnet , scratched his head a bit then came over to me and asked can you tell me where to i put the oil in my truck please

There's more to the story !

Just after a biker party in the state of Maine, an animal was found close to Route 4 near Turner, Maine on Saturday August 12, 2006. Witnesses reported the animal weighed between 40 and 50 pounds, had curled fangs extending over its lips, looked like a cross between a large rat like rodent and a wolf and had very human like eyes.

Residents of Androscoggin County have reported seeing a similar beast over the last few years. They said the animal would emit monstrous cries throughout the night. Along with the strange howls, the beast displayed eyes that glowed in the dark. The animal was blamed for attacking and killing numerous pets from nearby homes over that same time period. One wildlife official indicated it may have been some sort of rare wolf-dog hybrid. Tissue samples from the creature have been collected and sent the University of Maine and HealthGene in Toronto for genetic tests that will try and determine the origin of the wierd creature.

BTW: a XS11 is doing 220km/h = 133mph.

My old 2H9 from 1979 with nearly 194000km (=177000m) does this. (It uses a LOT of Oil then...)

But: Accel to 200 is quick, from 200 to 220 needs waiting.
