Been after one of these since I was a teenager...sooo happy to own one now.

Some background...apparently this bike stood in Germany for 20 years before being brought over to SA. The owner here was a Brit who owned it for 2 weeks with the idea of restoring it until his existing bike blew up and he needed some cash in a hurry. Says he had 5 buyers licking his backside but I was the only one who was happy to pay his price and so it arrived at my house after a 700km trip down our East coast on Monday.

So some pics:

Very tatty..but very original. (nice to get original exhausts)

Carbs must be badly gunged up..throttle won`t budge either

Still plenty 2stroke in there..suppose it can`t be much good after all this time

Look forward to getting new battery in there and see how are electrics

Hope you got the side pannels with it they are the hard part to find, the rest easy.1 identical up for sale here much nicer and the guy wants 4 k for it running all original so you have a big window of cash to spend before you spend more than it's worth

Wow that looks like an awesome project!

Could have so much fun working on that. Do a few modest improvements like HID's and new flat slide carbs, replace those discs with some drilled and grooved discs, etc just to bring it to this decade. However if originality is what you're after then don't.

Does look like it wants some loving though haha!

Not sure I'd want to use that two stroke lmao.

Hooked up a fresh battery today and got some life. All lights, indicators and horn working fine..I`m happy this bike runs 12 volt.

Progress so far. Going to be difficult getting carbs out. Stripped away back end to give some room.

Good progress Mac, great that the wiring is complete :yeah:

Yea..all the bits seem to be there. Considerably more wiring than the DT..treading very carefully through it all.

Aftermarket cheap gasket on one exhaust port. I hear the genuine gasket very expensive.

Think this filter past it. Just crumbles to powder when touched.

Nope, gaskets are just dearer than most 2strokes. Bout 15quid but very worth it as they seal perfectly.

They are the same on my TDR. Reccomended.

WIll definitely go original parts in that area. Found someone to do the engine for me whose done them before. He reckons if crank bearings and journals etc.ok, will cost around 420pounds..otherwise around 550pounds. If its this kinda money I will be happy.

Do the crank anyway, for an extra 100pounds you will be mad not to. You would spend 100 to save another 420.

As I said dont scrimp on a stroker rebuild, when the bike comes on song you WILL nail the throttle, its the law. That is when that crank will make you pay twice.

Most of the work you can do yourself no? Bearings and stripping it down. Then send the crank off to be rebuilt. Then put it all together. If laid out nicely it shouldn't be too much trouble. And could save you £££ in the long run. Money that could go to better uses :D

Don`t have enough experience to try free a piston that`s been seized for 20yrs..might damage something. Expensive parts going in here so rather let a pro do it.

Frame completely stripped now. Now for cleaning and painting.

Going to have plastics etc.painted this time. but will first see what the engine going to cost me.

Well put it this way. If the piston has been seized for twenty years there really is not much more damage you can do. It'll need a rebuild and a rebore/replate regardless. I think you're under selling yourself. You've stripped that bike beautifully and an engine is no more harder.

Work through it at a slow methodical pace and you'll be fine :D Have a little faith.

Looks good so far though

Do the work yourself after all its only a 2 Stroke or do most of it and save some cash. You'll also know that OEM parts were fitted.
