Cheap Thunderace has turned out to be quite expensive !

Hello all, so I have bought a cheap Thunderace, but it's not very well lol. Rear shock has no oil in it, forks only travel about 60mm, seized EX-UP valve, temp gauge doesn't work, end can held on by a jubilee clip that doesn't actualy do anything !

The bike has been resprayed, not very well, and the fairings have a lot of broken bits and cracks.

The good points are, 25,000 miles with all the old mot's to back it up, and loads of service history. Im going to get this bike right up together, and have all the fairings fixed and a complete respray including the wheels.

So far I have removed the rear shock, and taken it to a specialist to be serviced. Here is a couple of pics.

looks a good project.

that's all consumable parts so nothing really major as such (just expensive)

It's one of those "looks good at a distance bikes" but when you get close things aren't what they seem, shame really as it is a nice bike but as Drewpy says just bits that wear out anyway so not a major rebuild, seems like the last owner did a repair NOT replace on the parts so leaving the next poor sod who owns it YOU! the fun of turning it around. Should be an easy fix though and you get to know your bike really well which believe it or not is a GOOD thing. Just plod through the nasty bits and you will have a fine bike, keep you eye on the prize!!! :jossun:

@25,000miles you might want to check the state of the emulsion tubes - if they're worn then performance will be very poor and economy useless.

Thanks for the replys guys, I am very new to mechanics, so I'm learning as I go. What are emulsion tubes ? and just how hard is it to undo the header nuts, I have been told that it is very hard to undo them, without snapping them off !

Emulsion tubes are needle-jets in the carbs. They wear out on big, mikuni-carbed yamahas and cause loads of misery.

As for header nuts, try graphite-based penetrating fluid and heat [run the engine]

As above HEAT LOTS OF HEAT and then spray them with anything that will penetrate the rusty nuts and threads without catching fire, best to do it outside (not in the garage) and DO NOT force them or you will break them off, try gentle rocking motion, believe it or not it sometimes helps to tighten them slightly before you undo them, good luck. :jossun:

Hi, just a quick update, well I have taken the shock off, and taken it to a specialist, who is doing a complete service on it, including a new piston rod, 175 quid.
I have sorted the rev counter code, by removing the ex-up valve cables, so the servo is going through the motions without any resistance from the valve. I am going to replace the whole exhaust system anyway, so no need for the ex-up.
Temp gauge turned out to be a bad earth, so thats fixed now.

So, this is a 96, does that mean it's a fox-eye? I couldn't really tell from the pictures, but it kind of looks that way. If so, the guys at oldskoolyzf.com might be more help than the other one that I mentioned in my other post.... on that other thread..... I'm super specific....

Anyway, looks like an awesome project, I'd totally jump at the chance to grab an Ace as a project if I could get my hands on one!
