I have a 1974 dt 175, but the key it came with was not the original, which works the ignition switch, but not the petrol cap or the steering lock, all of which have the same number stamped into them, so I presume one key did the lot. It would be good to have such a key, if only for the steering lock. But is it possible to get such a key cut from the number stamped on the locks and switch?

A good locksmith might be able to help (not the kiosks you see in shopping centres).

You could always ask your local Yamaha dealer too - but that may cost more - but worth an ask.

Hi Lotty

My 1976 Dt 175 has one key that fits all its locks and all of the locks have the same number code etched in the lock face, so it is logical for your bike to originally be the same, As to getting a new key using the number, this place might be a good place to start.

You should be able to find a locksmith who will be able to cut a key from a lock.

A couple of weeks ago I took an ignition in to do just that and they needed to replace the bits inside the lock as well which were worn out. The bike only has the one lock on it so no big deal.

From that I'd say that if you took your locks in you would be able to have them keyed the same if you really wanted to. Get a quote first though...

So potentially a normal key cutting place that does keys for houses can cut bike keys too? its probably silly of me but I thought you needed to go to the dealer lol

I have heard story's of lock smiths, (clearly dodgy ones) who ask for address's when you get the key done, an then they know were your bike/house is an have an extra key copied to steal

Yep specialist locksmith whatever the qualification/experience is. The shop where I went has been there for a long time and they have just about anything to do with any sort of lock. We couldn't find a key for our old house window locks and they sorted that easy too. Pretty accommodating if you go to the trouble of taking things apart and making it easier for them although they put it back together upside down.

Cheers. Thanks for that info. I didn't know that they can so easily cut keys from the lock.

I think I will try a yamaha dealership first. Thinking about it a bit more, I suppose with the number they should be able to do it. It's just that with an old bike you think that there's no chance.

What I would really like is a skeleton key that will open any lock in the world.......the idea of one of those facinated me as a kid.
