RE: Rust on exhaust

Bike: Yamaha DT 125 RE (2006 reg).

As many of you already know the exhaust (front and end pipe) on a DT 125 can rust very quickly. When I bought the bike a month ago with 10.000 miles it already had some rust on the exhaust. After riding for a month it's getting much worse and becoming very ugly.

I don't wanna spend too much money on it (credit crunch LOL). How hard would it be to remove the exhaust from the bike and spray it in black with high temp exhaust paint shown in the following pages:

http://www.adrenalin-pedstop.co.uk/p/HIGH-...PAINT-1027.aspx

or

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/...tegoryId_165495

Perhaps I could even spray the exhaust without removing it from the bike. I would have to tape up everything around it.

Any ideas? Has anyone done it before (easy job or very hard) and will the paint actually last or just rust up again.

If it all goes well later on i may consider buying a full DEP exhaust, which is very expensive from what i have found in the following pages.

DT 125 RE / X / SUPERMOTARD 2004 > 2009 DEP REAR SILENCER - http://www.adrenalin-pedstop.co.uk/p/DT-12...-2004-1761.aspx

DT 125 RE / X / SUPERMOTARD 2004 > 2009 DEP FRONT EXHAUST EXPANSION - http://www.adrenalin-pedstop.co.uk/p/DT-12...-2004-1762.aspx

Look forward to some replies.

Enjoy the snow coming in the next couple of day in UK. :D

Cheers

Iv done it before i got the dep. Definately take it off then rub it down with wire wool then wet and dry to bare metal then hang it up somewhere ventilated by thin (strong) string then just spray it. You could use a primer first but i didnt and it was rusty again within a few months.

Thanks for the advice m8.

Ur DT looks really nice from the pic, I wanted a blue DT as well but only found black one :( . Yeah i'm gonna spray it and see how long that lasts me. By the way where did you get your DEP from and would you suggest the "big one" instead? Any suggestions?

When you took the exhaust out, how long did it take you roughly? How does be back exhaust connect to the front pipe. I'm kinda scared that i'll break it completely by trying to take it apart. Did you take the exhaust out all on one peace?

I've also been told I need new exhaust gaskets when i put the exhaust back on. Did you need these as well?

By the way i hear you can get yours to 75mhp. Mine is all original wth 10.000 miles and i've only got it to 65mhp. How much did you hit before you had your DEP?

Check out this DT, the guy went done up proper niceee - http://www.google.pt/imgres?imgurl=http://...=image&cd=1

I advise you to just get a full DEP system.

I had the same corrosion problem the original exhaust on my bike (DT125X) so I removed it, rubbed it down and painted it but it corroded again straight away.

It is really simple to remove the exhaust by the way, the expansion pipe is held on by about 5 bolts, just get busy with your spanners. The back box slips over the expansion pipe and is secured with a jubilee type fastener. once the bolts are undone, it pulls forwards. Try not to twist the pipe or the 2 threads at the front of the engine. Be careful not to scratch the frame, a second pair of hands helps!

I didn't use a new gasket when i fitted the DEP and there are no leaks at all.

For info, it sounds like your bike has not been de-restricted at all if it tops out at 65mph.

When I bought my bike I had the dealer de-restrict it (not sure exactly what they did) but the speedo needle

would run past 85mph! Not sure what it will do with the DEP fitted but it pulls much harder through the mid range and top end now, and sounds lovely.

For some reason my dep did leak and all over my cases so worth just getting a gasket because its a pain to get off

Thanks for the suggestion on just getting a DEP and not bothering with spraying the original exhaust.

Ur lucky man, you have the DTX...I wanted it but couldnt really find one near by and they seem to go for over £2000 so i went for the DT RE instead.

Yeah I don't think mine has be de-restricted at all. I might consider it later on...How much roughly did you pay to de-restrict it?

Any good suggestions on where to buy the DEP from and other bike gear?

Cheers

Costs absolutely nothing to de restrict a DT just around 15-20mins of your time

Even the mechanic told me that these new DT models are not as easy to de-restrict as the older models, so surely it can’t be simple.

Changing the exhaust is obviously part of the de-restriction process, but what else can I do? Please do let me know and I‘ll see if it makes a difference.

Firstly a mechanic is going to say that to get business from you.

Took me hardly no time at all, all you do is:

1. take off headlight so you can access under your speedo.

2. find the connector block that sits just before the speedo with cables going in one side and straight out the other.

3. One of the cables doesnt have another cable coming out the otherside, this is the one you need (has a coloured stripe running up the cable red or green cant remember)

4. Either add a length of cable to the space where a cable isnt coming out opposite OR cut this cable and earth it to you frame (bottom yoke would suffice)

5. go feel the difference, biggest diiference iv felt on my bike (more than dep) and was free.

Hope that was clear enough and helpful any more help just ask :D

turns out the Gianelli exspansion chamber is just clear laquered steel, which is a shame. Someone should make a stainless one to suit the dt, would be alot more suitable to our weather.

So who has the DEP system? and how long does it las without corroding? My DEP silencer is already corroded and rusty (the pipe before the silencer) and its just a year old. Is there any other alternatives that would last longer?

Yeah managed to sort the leak with copper instant gasket, silicone stuff.

Iv got a DEP had for around 8 months no rust at all. Gets a wipe over after every ride so all good. only problem is the poxy scuff on the expansion chamber from when i dropped it on the ice!
