  2. i would be looking at a 600, but go for something 'cooking', a gsr600 will cost a fraction of an r6 to insure yet will be as good or better 90% of the time. Remember full on sports bikes,don't tend to be as good at commuting. You may find insurance limits you anyway. R6s tend to be silly money to insure. look at fazers, gsxf650s etc. these will be better bikes restricted as well, if you have to have a 33bhp bike. An R6 restricted seems a bit daft to me! good luck and at least you can buy in the winter for the best discount!

  4. my advice is not tospend anything like all of your budget on whatever you buy. £1500 is a lot of money for something you might not want after a year. get a 6 or 7 year old bike for 600, and keep the difference foryour next bike. i would be looking at a more basic 125, as that way if you drop it its less to repair and its far less depressing. btw, only 2 stroke 125s which are (properly)derestricted will give decent performance, but avoid aprialia RS125s like the plague secondhand. good luck and dont buy the 1st bike you see, have a good look around.
  5. genuine parts, the best place is fowlers: http://www.fowlers.co.uk/ their postal parts service is apparently very good. i don't need to worry tho, as i live a 5 minute bicycle ride from them! they used to be crap, but now the blokes are very knowledgeable!
  6. if it isnt a duff earth, it may be that the battery is u/s and is drawing too much current, this is causing a voltage drop and the lamps to flicker in step with the indicators. why not take the indicators off?
  7. do they not go to a header tank? i dont knowmuch about these bikes, but w/c bikes usually have an expansion tank to 'dump'coolant when they are hot. maybe this is hidden somewhere they need to be reconnected to it. what size id and od are they?
  8. If you are worried about using unleaded in it, dont! The japs were using unleaded a long time before us, also the key concerns about using unleaded in 'leaded' engines is pinking and valve seat recession, neither of which are relevant on this bike.

  10. legislation says that at dipped beam a motorcycle can only have 1 light on, this is because if you had 2 lights on in a situation of poor visiblilty another vehicle might think you were a car etc at a distance (due to two beams) rather than a bike and close up (and poss pull out on you). some people bypass this, and many bikes have the wiring to do run both bulbs at dipped. Main beam a bike can have both on (because of course main beam is only used when there are no vehicles ahead), however i reckon yamaha only make one come on to prevent the alternator and battery getting toasted, on what is a small capacity bike of course it has 2 lamps to mimic the style of the bigger R-family bikes.
  11. Ha, mine gets modified by default. 1. when it goes wrong, i stick on whatever bits i can lay my hands on 2. when i chuck it up the road, and the only way to put it back on the road is aftermarket each to their own really!
  12. Is there someone that you know who owns a motorcycle who you could take to give you a second opinion? Maybe a local bike mechanic/parts store guy/bike mot, may be ableto go with you and give there advice for a few hours labour. If i was near nottingham, i do it for a few beer tokens If you do decide you might wanna buy it, get it hpi checked or equivalent. things to check on small bikes generally: brakes work, with no obvious leaks of fluids! suspension compresses and releases without lots of bounce. chain is in good nick (not slack)and rear sprocket isnt hooked. all electrics work properly. Starts easily (2 strokes can be hard to start if the spark plug is worn) is it two stroke or 4 stroke? i dont know much about these lil uns! check the locks havent been forced. See if it has original manual. Ask what engine oils have bene used in it, cheap oils may knacker it. Is it water cooled (like a car)? if yes check the coolant is topped up and not discoloured. check who actually owns it. there is loads of other stuff - just be careful, and remeber although it may be rare it is better to walk away if you are in any doubt than waste money on a dog. btw your parents are just having cautios doubts - they dont want to you to be ripped off, fair play to them. good luck!

  14. the first FZR1000 were made in '88. as you say the genesis. then from '89 on the EXUP. what reg is ur bike? can u post any photos?

  17. Im Merv from Bristol. Single (good/bad?) and im a teacher of dt which is cool cos weve got loads of mchinery i can ply with! I ride an '96 FZR1000 which iv h for 7 years, would love something newer, but insurance is only £95 a year so.... anyway bikes iv had (with a rating out of 10!) 1.Simson SR50 (6/10) east german!!! 2.Suzuki ZR50 (3/10) 3.Yamaha RXS100 (9/10) brakes were dire tho! 4.Honda CB250RS (2/10) had it for a day before a rep smashed into it on the motorway! 5.Honda CB400N Wet Dream (6/10) fell apart! 6.2nd RXS100 (2/10) was knackered. 7.RD350 YPVS F2 (9/10) great fun, wouldnt mind another one! 8. Present FZR1000 (9/10) anyway now iv bored you!!!!
  18. not sure wat gas prices are like in the US at the mo, but just done a quick check and US gallon (3.8 litres) of premium unleaded petrol/gasoline in the UK costs $8.32 (approx) last time i was in the states it was about 3.25USD. The UK really is a rip off
  19. are you sure there is no spark? you could try an old style strobe for setting points. these plug into the HT lead intead of the plug and light up if there is HT. worth a try.
  20. if you are unsure, get an engineering shop to so it for you. often it works out cheaper as they will have loads of coil options and better kit for doing it. Also they will be used to the process and less likely that it will go wrong.
  21. you gotta lock something up-never done variator rollers, but for example if i wanna take the front sprocket nut off on a chain bike, i stick a piece of wood through the wheel, so the chain and wheel and sprockets cant turn and then i can undo the nut. Guess you gotta find a way to do something similar
  22. dont know about R6s, btu the 1002cc exup engine is rattly at idle due to the starter chain and theres very little can be done apart from a rebuild-but its not serious anyway, just makes the bike sound a bit shit.
  23. for fitment, give these guys a try - i buy my C&S kits from em and they are cheap and affordable: i guess they will be able to advise you on the correct sprocket sizes and chain fitment. merv

    Which fuel???

    only really matters if you have efi and a knock sensor, like most modern cars. This because the spark is advanced to the point knock is detected for max power. 98/99 work well on many modern cars. On a bike running raised compression e.g. turbo or high-comp piston kits, it prevents detonation and spark-knock killing the engine. other than that why bother?
