  1. What no aircon? Poor sods. Anyway Prolonged vibration and noise increase fatigue/stress/irritability for road users which increases the chance of an accident.
  2. I like my bike quiet. Can't see the point in having noisy antisocial pipes which only you and the person behind can hear. All this talk about waking someone up in front is just that - talk. You can hear very little outside noise in a modern car, that's how they are designed. At least I can ride for 300 miles - with earplugs - and get off and still hear without ringing in ears. I went with my mate for a weeks tour round the uk this year - 2200 miles. My mate has had baffles put in his Harley now. Just my opinion.
  3. It's not necessarily what's going out the battery, it is how much is going in to keep it charged. Many motorbike have marginal charge when existing lights/electrics are working. I doubt the stop lights are legal - will it pass its MOT with them fitted? Scotch Lock connectors - work of the devil. Do it properly.
  4. Not sure anout the Virago but put any extra electrics on a XVS 650 and the battery doesn't charge. I suppose you could try LED running lights,
  5. Welcome. Good choice too. You'll love it.
  6. I don't think they should have a spring return - Mine doesn't. It is relatively stiff, as though there is some sort of friction in the system. I think there also may be notches on the small bit of 'bar' that pulls out. It only comes out just over an inch. Hope this helps

    Footie

OK, now the referendum is out of the way I am eager to follow out gallant English lads in this euro-footie thing. When's our next match so I can tune in? And where can I get those dinky little flags for the car?
  8. https://www.yamahamotorcyclespares.co.uk/genuineparts/9592/22/yamaha xvs650 1997 dragstar/drive shaft?uID=0 your welcome
  9. You could try these - I have never used them but they have been recommended in the past, http://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-xvs650_model16860/ http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/yamaha/xvs_650_a_drag_star_classic/07/ and this for how to do it http://650ccnd.com/ht.htm
  10. I think I have a slightly differnt system which is causing the confusion, sorry about that Noise I've got footboards - and there is a pedal height adjuster under the forward controls. I don't need to shift the bracket on the drum. The nut at the brake drum end, as you say just affects the pedal free play.
  11. that's what I said - adjust with locknuts on threaded bar. I was sort of agreeing with earlier post but you can do it all from just under the footbrake. You don't need to take off silencers - I didn't on my 650 but the 400 may be different
  12. It is his rearbrake the OP is on about. It is a drum brake and adjustment, as has been noted above is all done with lock nuts and threaded bar.
  13. Here you go - photos They start from the bottom - I can't do sorting. And as you can see the weather at Land's End was rubbish. The locks are at Fort Augustus by Loch Ness. The bikes are parked at Patterdale in The Lakes The pic below is at Onich near Fort William - and that is a seal in the loch. The black blob! Layby 83 on A9.
  14. I'll try and get some photos together soon
  15. I had one a few years ago now. Bought it new. It was ok round towns and if you were out for a ride in the country. But if you wanted to go places it was a bit more of a problem. They struggle on windy days and then overtaking lorries just becomes a pain. It has to be planned. I weighed in at 85 kg, so I imagine if you are a fairy it would be better. If all yer mates have 125's going out with them is no bother. I wish I had kept mine for solo riding - it was nippy and narrow. Important in the lanes of Norfolk.
  16. A few months ago my mate decided he fancied a big ride for the year of his 60 birthday so I said I would go with him - if we stayed in B&B's. We are just back from an 8 day 2200 mile trip round the uk, doing all the usual biking things. Up to John o Groats, down to Land's End - a truly dreadful place. We rode from middle England via A68 to Peebles then north to Thurso. Single track roads down mid Scotland, Loch Ness to Fort William, Lake District and Wales (just a bit), then 'Atlantic Highway' (who thought that name up) to south. From Penzance along south coast to Hove and then back to Norfolk. I thought my buttocks may have got used to it by the end, but no. We still needed regular stops, and not just for fuel. And on the fuel issue I was really surprised that my 07 xvs650A easily managed 50 mpg and sometimes more whilst doing 65mph on motorways/dual roads. However I did get from just outside Hove via M25 to the turn for Stansted without changing gear. 89 miles in 1hr 45min. It made me smile. We also think we rode through 27 English counties, but I have to check that. We didn't bother counting the Scottish or Welsh ones. We really do have some very good countryside round the UK, even though the weather can be a bit indifferent but I think we may be looking for other trips for next year. PS My mate has a Harley - even he thought it was noisy by the end.
  17. Don't know if this is the case with a 400 - it is with a 650 - but you may need to adjust the brake light switch to activate at the appropriate point.
  18. jonnyf - it helps if you don't post the same thing in two differnt places. Either Workshop or Custom. I agree with Slice re battery connections and said similar wherever else you posted this.
  19. Could be a poor/non existant earth connection. You say the battery is only six weeks old - has the earth cable become loose or broken during replacement? Disconnect battery check and clean earth teminal on battery and bike. Reconnect and see what happens. Good luck.
  20. It wasn't with my band new out of the crate 2006 YBR125. That was just as smoooth as you would expect a clutch to be. Sorry to sell it really but needed a bit more grunt.
  21. I've had Halfords semi-synth in my bike for last 8 years - no slip here.
  22. Hello. - And you've got a proper bike
  23. Advice - post in new members area first.
  24. I read this and thought the dipstick idea was a good one, so I would give it a try. Beats crawling on the garage floor. However when I took the filler plug off I find you can't get a dipstick in the sump - there are baffles or something just inside the filler hole. Or at least there is on my XVS650A.
