  1. In theory, if I where to add an easily avalable hotter cam to an average engine, say a 500cc twin, what sort of other changes would I have to make? Obviously some carb tuning such as jets and such, but if there anything else I'd need to think about? As far as I can tell it'd just be carb tuning but I thought I'd ask here first just in case.
  2. There are specific settings for those screws, usually measured in number of turns, they probably shouldn't just be bottomed out, this is likely a part of the issue. Perhaps the crank seals weren't done correctly.
  3. Perhaps an air leak between the carb and the bike, or perhaps the air filter and the carb. Perhaps a crank seal? (These are 2 stroke? right?) When did this start happening?
  4. I love that sound, kind of amazing how far motorcycles have come since this era of motorcycles, but honestly I'd prefer this over a more modern bike any day of the week. 60hp isn't to be sniffed at.
  5. If it is an overheating situation, it may have just been the hot weather, if not that then there could be something causing the overheating. But this is just speculation on the possibility of an overheat. Generally the most simple answer if the correct one.
  6. Since it started when it cooled down maybe a heat issue? Engine cut out to stop itself overheating? Excessive heat caused an electrical issue?
  7. I'd prefer to go like that than becoming some mad elderly bloke who's losing his mind. Unfortunate it happened but it did, doesn't mean road racing should end. If we banned something every time it killed someone we'd have nothing. Stopping people doing things like this would be stopping them from living, who are the government to stop them anyway, they know the risks.
  8. I tend to leave a lot of oil and grease on the bike for that exact reason Why wash away perfectly good rust prevention?
  9. I was in town buying a can of engine gunk and I got thinking about how one would degrease a bike in ye old days. Say in the 40's-50's or such when such products where difficult to find, how would you clean grease and oil from an engine? Some household method or would you just use a rag and deal with it? Anyone have any ideas?
  10. I had a similar issue, turns out it was just gunk and corrosion on my battery terminals, check they're clean and tight. Other than that maybe it'sd an ignition barrel issue? Could also be dirty contacts inside the ignition barrel? My barrel was full of corrosion after the winter, I filled it with WD40 and clicked it on and off a load of times and it clean itself up. (Don't use WD40, it'll leave oil inside the ignition, I used it because I was in a pinch, use Electrical Contact Cleaner)
  11. Currently helping in a restoration of this exact bike, a 1980 Kawsaki KZ1000 LTD, didn't mention as this is a Yam forum. Thus far got it running, fixed the tank, electronics and clocks. Slowly working through. Believe it or not it still have the original tires from 1980 (The test ride after the first fire up was sketchy with those flat spots, bump bump bump bump), original chain and sprockets, brake pads, everything, only 8000 miles from brand new. I'm convinced these old lumps had better build quality than any modern bike, everything just works, plus with some mods you can get them up to 150hp believe it or not. This is said KZ: I LOVE these old air cooled 4 cylinder, they sound mean and sound properly pissed off when you really get onto it.
  12. Ahh yeah that's what it was. Sorry for the vague description, you could hardly see it through the other bikes, it was half buried.
  13. I was wandering around my local bike mechanic/dealer and found something very unusual. A big old air cooled 4 cylinder, sort of thing you'd expect to see in a Z1000, but it had a King and Queen seat, and had a semi cruiser style and a big tear drop tank. Poor thing looked like it had been laying on it'#s side in a shed for decades. Didn't have any identificatgion on it apart from a Yamaha badge on the tank. Kinda as if someone had stuck a 4 cylinder air cooled motor into an xs650 Does anyone have a single clue what it could have been?
  14. Been lovely here all day, had a lot of fun bombing about twisty country lanes
  15. I'd start be checking little things like valve clearances and cam chain tension. You can put a screwdriver tip the the engine and use it to listen, almost like a stethoscope, that will allow you to figure out where the noise is coming from. Difficult to tell from the video, sound quality wasn't even near what you can hear in person.

    New bars

I've only got 10HP, and the crappy standard lines already quite good, I'll probably not spend a bomb on braided lines but I'll definitely not cheap out. Only issu I have with the new bars if that I'm a little cramped, but I'll see how it is in day to day for the next for weeks, still got the old ones if I don't like them.
  17. Like airhead said, maybe a mucky carb. Has it sat for a while?

    New ride!

Looks like you got yourself a perfect bike for touring. How far are you planning to go? Forgive my ignorance but didn't they also make an FJ turbo? Or was that just the 650? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick here?
  19. I watched that a while ago, it looks ridiculous, I believe jay Lenno also did a road test on his YouTube channel. I can't watch for electric motorcycles to become commonplace, but I'm sure as hell gonna miss big old lumpy petrol engines when they eventually take over.
  20. Nice find, I hear a lot of countries in southern Europe/Middle east have bike bit's scattered all across for pennies. Having something small to work on like that when your bored is great fun, I tend to do it sitting at my desk whilst watching a film or something. Like carbs, or break calipers, more fun than a lot of people think.

    New bars

What do you guys think? (keep in mind that the cables had yet to be cleaned up at this point in the installation) Gotta say the difference in handing is ridiculous, I've found that what was once the limit on a bend is now more than comfortable, plus I'm enjoying the new riding stance a lot, feels like this is how the bike should have come from the factory, not with those ridiculous mini apes. Probably gonna get a set of bar risers (it just touches slightly at full lock), shorten the wiring coming from the controls and get myself a new front break line (needed one anyway).
  22. People tend to be condescending arse holes when it comes to engines. I just find them funny, they spend more on wax and cleaning fluid than petrol to ride the damn thing
  23. Hmm, I've heard reports of this from new ones, maybe it's hit and miss? Or something that happens with age? Still haven't solved this problem. Yeah, I don't like how slow it is. People often say "well you don't NEED more power", ohh really, why don't you have one then? 125's are annoyingly slow, thankfully I can move up soon.
  24. Thanks for the tip. I'll keep it in mind for future bikes but this is a problem that has faced YBRs that are brand new out of the crate,
  25. Read the other linked post. A juddery clutch is a problem that I've talked to other YBR owners about, they've noticed the same thing. No, I'm not being overly gentle, no, I don't own a car, I've owned the bike since 2014 and am familiar with the way a motorcycle works and sounds. It may not be on here because the majority of guys on here have long ago progressed to larger bikes, or much like Malleus they live with it. That's what I've been doing since I've owned it, kinda sick of the judder at this point, searching the internet their seems to be no fix for this, I wonder why it happens. No other manual bike I've rode has had this problem, I've come across stiff clutches, but never one that WILL judder unless you ride it for an unusually long time.
