  1. Figured something like that.... Actually.. It will only shift with no clutch when it's in a high revving state. But yeah.. clutch from now on lol.. thanks.
  2. Hey.. wondering if somebody could give me a little insight on this.. I have a Yamaha DT 400.. and sometimes when I shift.. I forget to hit the clutch.. BUT!.. it shifts with no problems with no clutch. Is it necessary all the time to use the clutch? Really just wanting to know incase i'm in the trail and my clutch cable goes on me.. I know that when I'm stationary.. I have to use the clutch to go in to neutral or first after stalling it in mud or something. Thanks for any help you fella's (and gals if there are any) can give me. -Derwood
  3. Well.. I bought my 1976 DT 400 for $430 CAD. I'd imagine if it's in really good shape.. you might get about 400 bucks.
  4. oops... sorry for the false hope I was able to get NGK plugs for my 1976 DT 400.. I also live in Canada though. Have you tried Champion plugs?
  5. First time Yamaha owner here.. and I gotta say.. i'm hooked. My question is.. where is a good resource to find owner/repair manuals for older yamahas? My current yamaha is a 76 DT 400.. i'm completely in love with it! I know my way around an engine for the most part.. it would however help if I could get my hands on the service manual.. even the owners manual. It currently has no lights except the head light. I usually use it for the bush.. but in the last few days.. am now thinking of putting it on the road.. So wiring would be my first priority. Also.. I noticed there's a battery under the seat.. yet I don't see an electric start.. only kick. Mind you it kicks over in one kick. Am I wrong.. does it have a starter? Any info would be great!! Thanks in advance! -Derwood
  6. Hey all.. I'm new to the site! Also first Yamaha I've owned. I figured I'd offer my help/advice before asking my question lol.. seems only fair. I bought a 1976 Yamaha DT 400.. she's great! all the signal lights and junk aren't on it anymore, except the headlight, and tack and speedo, and I use it for the bush anyhow. She starts with one kick.. always. It's in really great shape. here's a pic. And here's my question... Can anybody help me find a service or owners manual.. in PDF format or along those lines? I'd really like to tune it up nice.. I'd say the only thing it needs is new reeds.. but it would still be nice to have.. Any help would be greatly appreciated!.. Oh.. and i'm hooked on Yamaha now.. I have a funny feeling this forum will be my new home! -Derwood.
  7. Here's the spark plug you should have for it. http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/part_finder/m...08&type=reg
  8. Well.. for the spark plug.. pull it out and go at it with a wire brush. For the carb.. twist both screws out until they almost come all the way out.. but not off the threads... it's quite the process.. but give them a half or qaurter turn in.. then try and start it. and keep doing this till it starts. Tired of kicking it over? go up a slight incline.. my DT 400 will bum start in 2nd gear.. I bet your bike will to. so yeah.. if you get tired of kicking and kicking.. just roll it down the hill in second.. pop the clutch and see if she starts. Also.. as for the throtle sticking.. pull the carb right out.. open it up.. make sure the needle is going all the way down.. if not.. or it looks dull.. some very fine grit sandpaper will put the point back on it.. but be super careful to do it evenly. that's all I can think of for the problems you mentioned. Also.. if there's any way you can get your hands on a compression gauge.. check the spec's for your bike.. and see if the compression is good. You may need new piston rings. So yeah before doing any of that.. check the compression first. Hope that helps. -Derwood.
