  1. OK here are some basics. Rust is just metal and oxygen combined. Some metals oxidise easily and then protect themselves Some metals oxidise and just keep on going.... Iron oxidises easily.....so look after that..the more oxygen the more it oxidises...it really is a slow burn... Chrome oxidises and then forms a protective barrier which doesn't oxidise easily....thats always about a quick clean and polish. Your forks rust because the chrome is usually really thin, wears away and the iron underneath oxidises. Aluminium oxidises dead quick at the surface and then provides a protective layer....thats why is goes dull over time. Stainless steel has lots of chrome and/or nickel in and doesn't oxidise..the clue is in the "stainless" In order to protect the metals that will rust quick the answer is don't let oxygen get at it. (An iron nail will not rust in water that has been bolied for ages as there is no oxygen in it..did you not do that at school?) So the answer is ... a thin wipe of oil or wd40 on exposed parts helps to protect them...or paint them...if you want to . Anything that stops the oxygen getting at them. It is not the water that rusts it is the oxygen in the water. Keep your forks clean..do not put oil on those as they don't need it...just keep them clean. Hope that helps
  2. Good effort mate...hope its not a train coming :-)
  3. Ok here is my offering for riding in winter/wet.... Riding: 1. Ride smooth as silk. 2. Ride smooth as silk. 3. Ride smooth as silk. ...you got that..smooth as silk Clothes: Get warm and stay warm. I have seen too many riders stood at the side of the road shivering because they had soaking wet clothes on. Hyperthermia causes slowing of the brain and poor decision making. Confidence: At home stand next to your bike and lean it over. Now try and slide the wheels sideways....its hard isn't it. When you are travelling at speed in a corner the downforce is increased so sliding is unlikely if you are ...riding smooth as silk..and you don't hit diesel, oil, deep water. Ride defensively: Make yourself big on the road. Own the space you are in. Commentate to yourself the first few times you are out on what you see and what you are doing. Give everyone space. And lastly don't be a dick: Let cars overtake you if they feel the need. Don't race from a standing start. Don't screech to a halt. Don't lean over in corners for the hell of it. Don't flick the "v's" at drivers, that involves taking you're hands of the handlebars.... Enjoy it....its what we all like to do :-)
  4. Thanks guys...the weird thing is that all the other lights work...just the headlight and it is defo the black earth lead that is not earthed. So I could splice it into the parking light earth....but that would feel like defeat! Also just bought a £160 new speedo and guess what...that doesn't work either...evrything else is fine and dandy....I don;t need to put it back on the road but it would be nice to.
  5. Hi I have an xt125x that I am getting back on the road. The headlight does not work...it works off the bike. I have traced the problem to the black earth wire from the back of the light. Whilst all the other lights work, a quick resistance check is showing the black lead is not grounded. Now...the black wire disappears into the wiring loom and must connect to ground somewhere. I have a wiring diagram which shows it links up to all the other lights...they all work remember...so it must be a fault either at the connection of that black ground wire somewhere or a fail in the wire..... So question...does anyone know where it connects to ground...or will I have to strip the wiring loom back? I know I could just bypass it but I would like to do it properly. Cheers uberphoebe
