  1. and airscrew all the way in then 1 and 1/4 turns out for factory setting?
  2. Also on trying to start..throttle open/closed? 1/4 throttle?
  3. Airhead..in your first pic..where is the long brass tube sticking up on yours at the bottom of the bowl?..you see mine has it. Can I take it off to clean? I presume this is the deep hole Blackhat is referring to for feeding choke jet.
  4. Hi Airhead..yep premix..once running will check autolube pump. Battling with pics on this site..I know you`re on the YamahaDTClub forum as well ..have put some pics there..also a comment there from Blackhat: Oil pump to carb spigot was sealed. Aha " put your hand over the back of carb, when running. just leave a small gap between fingers, then open throttle,, Yo see piccy 1, that deep hole , did you clean that, thers a small opening at bottom. this feeds choke jet with fuel.. 5. Ok..carb off, stripped, sprayed carb cleaner everywhere..blew out with compressed air..cleaned out by the choke. Could see light thru both jets. Assembled again, yet it still only runs for couple of seconds if I put fuel in by the spark plug. Soon as I try give some throttle it dies. Any more suggestions?..maybe take carb in to the professionals for a makeover. Let me just say there is no air cleaner element fitted..as well as no hoses from the carb (drain lines..oil line..etc). The carb pretty much naked at the moment..would think shouldn`t make a difference as I`m just trying to get it to run.
  6. Hi Airhead..Will try..just to get it started again..I have the feeling something may be blocked. Will try again with some quickstart tomorrow.
  7. Fitted carb and tank..put in some premix and had a go at starting it. After quite a few kicks went for some quickstart. Couple kicks later it started. Not running too bad but not wanting to idle so fiddled with idle screw. But after she idles herself warm and I switch off it battles to start again. Some carb adjustment maybe?
  8. Finally got piston kit from Yambits. Engine went in today and exhaust now mounted. I see i need special sockets for these bolts..a wise man told me a gedore socket can strip them. Found that out today on one engine bolt. Been sanding and spraypainting my backside off for 2 days. Learned Satin Black much nicer then Gloss Black. Did the frame in gloss and repainted the chrome handlebars Satin black. Painted cylinder and head with heat resistant black..as well as exhaust. Need to do something with engine covers still..Satin black it is. Wanted to go for Sunshine red for tank and plastics..but my paint supplier never heard of it as they only specialize in cars. Went for a Fiat Rosso Avis red instead...looks good I think. Can`t wait to get the carb on and see if she starts. Will have to use premix as im not sure if autolube pump still working (the guy disconnected the oil pump tank..but not the cable to the pump..so she might have run dry. Still also need to make a plan with the rims and hubs later Oh..forgot to mention..that kickstart lever has got to go..been irritating me since day one.
  9. Thanks for quick response Airhead. Will take note.
  10. My new piston kit finally arrived from Yambits after 3 weeks waiting. Going to install with a mechanic friend tomorrow. Its a 0.5mm upsize kit. I bought the bike rebored with new piston kit fitted, but top ring was broken. I have been reading of rings breaking due to ports not chamfered after reboring. Not sure if this is what happened here. DT175G 1980 model 4L9 serial. Are there any pitfalls I should be aware of when doing this installation?
  11. Must say..this thread has helped me. I am restoring a 175 to this red colour. Had a picture but didnt know the spec. Thanks guys. Would like to show a pic what I`m aiming for..but its quite a mission on this forum.
  12. What if the speedo gauge itself has been pampered with. Mine looks like it was glued badly together and the plate inside is bent and looks like a dog`s breakfast. Is it possible to get into these gauges to tidy them up?
  13. Actually just read about this on this forum while browsing a DT250 restoration..maybe this is what happened..not sure if its been done. Better make sure before I install new piston.
  14. Found the culprit..head and barrel off..found top piston ring broken into pieces..piston slight damage..will replace both. I`m guessing previous owner did not take it easy after the rebore. Luckily the bore looks ok. Are pirate piston & rings ok?
  15. Should have mentioned he says one of the head bolts refused to tighten properly.
  16. Hi Everyone When I got this DT to restore, previous owner told me it had seized, so he did rebore with oversize piston and rings. He says it ran for a week and lost compression. But if I feel resistance on the kickstart it seems to have pretty good compression. Could I get some fuel in and try start..or could I cause damage?
  17. yep..can`t wait to change that colour..silver maybe.
  18. Hi Fellow Yamaha admirers Just joined..my dream is a garage with 3 bikes..DT175..XT250..XT500..from 77 to 81 era. I owned them all in the eighties new from the factory. Had a beautiful XT500 5 years ago but sold it..much to my regret now. I have started again on my dream having just aquired a DT175 from 1980 with complete restoration in mind. I will have much questions.
