  1. After two years on my YBR I just noticed the same thing happening today. Going down the gears feels really rattly, and they make an ovious clink (not a thud, more like a clatter) and when I come off the throttle and let it roll more or less, it sounds like something's loose somewhere. Going to sort out the chain (been a good month since I've given it care, oops) but I'm really hoping it's nothing internal. Nothing on accelleration or steady speed though- just going down. If i'm in 3rd doing about 22-25mph with the throttle off it's pretty obvious. Never heard it before though!
  2. Haha, yeah I did figure I'd be doing some uuh, interesting riding if I WD40d the brakes. Did as you said Welshman, and it's looking (and riding) MUCH better! A friend of mine also suggested Dupont Teflon All Purpose Lube, and it sounds pretty amazing as it cleans whilst lubricating. Anyone tried it?
  3. Hi all, Again, probably a bit of a silly question but genuine lack of knowledge on my behalf. What should I be doing in the wet/winter season to look after my YBR? I know all the regular stuff but I'm worried all this water is doing damage; I haven't been riding often (floods, floods everywhere!) and the bike stands (covered) in the street as I'm a city dweller. All this isn't boding well- there's beginnings of rust on the chain links which I'll try to deal with ASAP, but what else should I be looking after/ out for? Thanks!
  4. Duly noted and taken on board! Will do my best not to break anything, or set fire to the bike and the container with my entire life's belongings inside it haha. Thanks so much for all the help everyone- had a little look and a tinker and now everything makes sense; as usual it's a lot simpler than I thought. Onwards and upwards!

Well I popped open the side panel and was presented- much as described above, with a small battery hoisted by a rubber belt with two wires coming out of top left and right corners- one negative and positive apparently. My only concern as a totally clueless person is that if I put a screwdriver to them they're going to fry me. Or fry something else (which would be even more tragic as this IS my baby). IS it safe to unscew and disconnect those wires with standard tools and is there an order/procedure by which to do it? Checked my manual and it very helpfully said "If you're planning to store your motorbike for a long period of time you should fully charge the battery and remove it." It then went on to say NOTHING about how to remove it

  7. I have to put my YBR into storage (container in a warehouse) for a month and a half and with good reason the company asked me to make sure I disconnect the battery when I leave it. I do NOT know how to do this and scoured google with no result. Can someone please give me a simple breakdown of how this is done? I'm not too DIY-savvy in the motor department! Thanking you!
  8. Hey LP try a little blip of the throttle just at the moment you pull the clutch, it will match the engine speed to the lower gear and change easily I'll give that a shot next time I'm out. I was always told- throttle off, clutch, gear, gentle clutch release & throttle. Sometimes though I feel I need to make that down-gear really quickly and totally neglect the gentle clutch release. I know, I'm terrible. I have to make the clutch release really slow sometimes- I figured that's probably because I'm not slowing down enough to change gear but at the same time I don't like to knacker the brakes out :/. Still wrapping my head around it- really wishing I'd ridden more regularly but I'm not going to lie- Bristol traffic is a little intimidating (especially because I ride with a GPS- everything is one way and I don't know for the life of me where I'm going half the time).

She is a really nice ride- I still manage to get a 'clunk' whenever I change down a gear every now and then but I'm pretty sure that's because I have't properly ridden in a while and I'm having to learn my ABCs again haha. In response to Mike- yurr, 's gurt lush 'ere innit! No, I've clung onto something between Somerset and Queen's English. The best thing is how little petrol costs- everyone I know has a car and are constantly whingeing about how expensive the upkeep is. Well it costs me a tenner to fill up, and that only happens every once in a blue moon because the bike just goes and goes and goes. Still not sure what to move up to once I pass my full test though. The sports models are tempting but at the same time something like an oldschool Triumph would be nice.

Latecomer to the forum world here, Did my CBT and got on in February 2012 with a Yamaha YBR as my trusty steed, but only now really starting to come into my own with taking it more seriously and riding out regularly. I started out in the countryside and moved to Bristol only a month after doing my CBT so it's been a massive learning curve and I'm just waiting to put aside enough to pass my full test (no small feat these days with all the financial doom and gloom!). Finally sorting my lovely bike with a proper service and getting on the road good and proper- the YBR's been a pleasure to ride so far

    1st bike help

    Just going to first say that I'm mighty glad I found this thread! I got my YBR (2007) in February 2012 and she's been an irreplacable friend to me. The speedo cable was being temperamental- so that needed changing, and the front brake was catching a little (a good smack on the drum with a fist sorted that, not a problem since funnily enough!). The headlight on the YBR is absolute rubbish- change the bulb asap- vast improvement! In response to one of the later posts about the rear fender- my bike got knocked over a fair amound in the weather since I've only got on-street parking and the number plate bracket broke (flimsy thing. Yamaha need to start making metal ones, honestly) so I've just been to 'the shop' and brought home this unnecessarily huge rear fender which I now need to fit. I'm a complete newbie to the whole self-service doodah, and the screws on the fender currently fitted are rusty as hell so I doubt they'll even go on. Does anyone know what sort of screws that part uses, or should I just take it to the garage? I haven't had her serviced (except for the MOT this passed May). Do I DIY this or do I just let the folks at the garage do what they do best? P.S. If you haven't had your new bike serviced when you bought it, I strongly suggest it! I didn't and I was kicking myself when all those little issues kept coming up. My speedo cable gave up on me on the day I was moving house- it was an absolute nightmare, so it's genuinely best to get your new bike properly looked at and tweaked before you start whizzing around .
