  1. Does anyone have a stock wiring diagram for a 80-81 US model XT500 with the CDI?
  2. I know of people that use battery eliminators on SRs and XTs and the turn signals work fine. I think mine will work well enough to pass inspection though.
  3. I tried grounding my LED turn signals straight to the capacitor (battery eliminator) and they still don't work well under about 2.5k rpm. I'll have to do more troubleshooting on that but the tail light and head light are great!
  4. Cool, I have an electronic flasher also. I think I mut have a bad ground somewhere or something.
  5. Thanks for the offer but I still have my stock signals. I don't like how big they are so I got the small LED signals. Do the stock signals work well for you with this conversion?
  6. Yeah, my headlight is about the same, under 2k rpms and it is not very bright. I am using a 60/55w bulb as well. Are you running turn signals? If so, how are they working for you?
  7. Thanks for the link, that dent really bothers be I was actually just thinking about grounding the signals straight to the battery so thanks for reassuring me! The turn signals actually aren't that bad at higher rpms ( above about 2.5k )
  8. I bought some cheap crappy ones on ebay. I don't like them and wouldn't recommend them. They are not very bright and one of them has some LEDs that are out. They look good just sitting there though! I am still trying to figure out the flasher though I am wondering if there is something else going on with my wiring because they will not flash (and are barely on at all) while idling but they come on and start flashing when the revs get higher. I am getting a different flasher anyway so I will see if that helps. I am also going to borrow a multi-meter tonight and do some checks.
  9. Yeah, Moab is a blast! Here are our Moab toys: There's some pretty crazy country down in southern Utah: http://s587.photobucket.com/albums/ss319/teledan/Goblin%20Valley%20Sept%2009/
  10. Thanks sacha, I actually got my xt500 from a guy in Pocatello. And I got another xt500 a while back from a guy in Boise.
  11. Thanks! Here is a link to my album: http://s587.photobucket.com/albums/ss319/teledan/My%20XT500/ And here are a bunch of SR/XT/TT inspiration pics I have gathered: http://s587.photobucket.com/albums/ss319/teledan/Motorcycles/Yam%20500/ I am going to try to make my own seat/tail section and I will be running some low superbike bars. I just got the new carb on and I haven't had a chance to mess with it at all yet. I can tell it is running rich but I can also tell that it is going to make a huge difference already! I am a college student and I work full time so it has been a very slow process but I hope to get some time in the next week or two to finish up the exhaust.
  12. I am in the middle of doing this conversion on my US 81 XT500. I am using LED turn signals and I thought that the stock flasher might work but it turns out it wont so I am waiting on a new flasher but everything seems to be working other than that. I am also running a capacitor in place of the battery. Oh and I did have an issue with the little indicator bulb in the gauge. With that in, all four turn signals would come on at once. I just pulled the bulb and it is fine now but I may end up doing this fix: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0BD_MkiU7JpcHZHRnhCbXZGV2c/edit http://www.rexs-speedshop.com/epages/es143131.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/es143131/Products/ITK1 BIG thank you to the OP for all the work you have done on this! This is a great mod that should save me a lot of time and hassle! I will be doing it on the wife's XT250 as well!
  13. XS750 (non leading axle) or TX750 tubes will slide right in!!! They are 36mm in diameter. You can then use either a 19" mag from an XS750, XS650, SR500, ETC. or you can use a wire wheel from an XS650, TX650, or TX750. I am going to be using the XS750 tubes with the mag off the same bike on my 81 XT500 project. Good luck!
  14. Hi Everybody! My name is Dan and I live in Utah. I currently have an 81 XT500 and an 81 XT250 (my wife's bike). I am working on doing sort of a cafe style bike with my XT500. I just put on a new mikuni VM36 carb and am working on the exhaust now. I am in the middle of converting it to 12v lighting as well. I am going to use fork tubes from an XS750 to have a disc brake up front. I will probably convert the XT250 to 12v as well this winter. Thanks for having me! -Dan
