  1. well, got the tank clean. I like the chain idea, jimmy; much easier to remove than a bunch of nuts. So after getting it clean, I have a feeling using a sealer may not be a bad idea. Some of the rust has begun to eat away at the surface metal inside. it's not rotting, but some of the silver is definitely gone, and will continue to go unless treated. We did get a NOS petcock ordered...the original petcock was in rough shape. The neck extending into the tank had completely fallen apart, and there was no filter material left on it. Once that arrives we'll try to get this thing fired up!
  2. got it. pretty easy once I decided to just take the cap off. Just a couple screws which hold it to the tank. Tomorrow it gets cleaned....with somethin...
  3. the petcock isn't "bolted" to the tank that I can see. There is a bolt on the rounded bottom of the petcock, but that appears to hold the top & bottom half of the petcock together. Im worried if i take that off the inner mechanisms of it will fall apart or something. There is also a plate on the switch side of the petcock, held by 4 small screws. But nothing actually bolts to the tank. I've read that they screw on sometimes. But the way this one is shaped (rounded rectangle where it meets the tank), I can't turn it cause it's not perfectly round. I'll probably end up taking the one bolt off the bottom, seeing as it will most likely need a new filter anyway. So I'll do that and see where it gets us! Thanks Airhead
  4. removing it. i'd like to get it off the tank so we can clean the tank without getting sludge into the petcock. are you thinking something too volitile would be bad for the inside of the tank, or are you worried about an explosion if I'm careless? You kind of lost me with the match thing.
  5. got the fuel tank off my freinds YA6, ready for cleaning. We are trying to figure out how the petcock comes off. I don't want to take a bolt off and have a bunch of springs fly out on me. anyone have info on removing that? Once we get that off we're ready for cleaning. 1. spray with hose to get any loose stuff out 2. fill halfway-ish with some water & ball bearings/washers/whatever will "scrape" the walls and shake shake shake 3. throw in some laquer thinner and shake some more 4. thoroughly dry 5. install i'm leaning towards NOT using a sealant (assuming it will eventually breakdown and clog the fuel system) sound about right?
  6. ahh still no signals. But wondering if someone can help me out with the lettered fuse panel behind the battery. I tested the terminals, and only the top terminal (couldn't see it's letter cause it was covered by the wire) and 3rd from top had power. The 3rd terminal only had power cause it looped back to the top terminal, but didn't send that power out to any other wires. So my question is...anyone know which of those terminals are supposed to have power? I forget the letters: A, E, F, B, T, M maybe...? I'll write them down next time i'm by the bike
  7. yeah I'm learning on the fly here, not just about this bike, but just wiring in general. Gotta start somewhere, and in my case it's on a '64 yamaha. thanks for your patience...much appreciated. I misread the last line from your previous post but i'm pretty sure I get it now. Gonna try to get something done after work tonight...I'll post results. Thanks again!
  8. so i think i've got the relay figured out, thanks for the help guys. from the relay: P (power) to ignition L (switch) to brown/white wire G (ground) to chassis where i'm still slightly confused is the indicator lamp bulb wire: right bulb wires (orange & black from above) to right signal switch (dark green)? left bulb wires (red & white from above) to left signal switch (dark brown)/ OR does each clump of 3 wires (orange, black, dk green for right side / white, red, dk brown for left side) hook up as a ground on the chassis?
  9. Yeah I'm really bad a deciphering the wiring diagram. I'm learning, but learning slow. Thanks for the response, Airhead
  10. thanks fellas. Let's hope I can get my friends bike on the road this weekend. She's ready to drive it! Dealing with hack jobs to wiring is
  11. here is where I'm at right now. My freind just picked this bike up, and here is how we found the guts of the headlight bucket. All I've done so far is sort out what wires are going where. All electrical works except for electric start & turn signals. anybody have any pointers on where some of this is supposed to go? or if i even have the right number of relays? Diagram shows only one flasher relay, but there are two in here...? thanks!
  12. hey everybody, just signed up because, yes, I need halp! i'm new to bikes (usually work on cars), and in fact don't even have my "new" bike in the garage yet (77 Honda 350). But my friend just picked up a YA6, and I know we already have questions. anyway, just saying hi. If you know anything about the wiring, feel free to chime in. I'll be posting shortly in the "classics" section. Thanks
