  1. it was yeah if the 550 is already low enough on bhp in its unrestricted form thats a great start. ive seen it done before every now and again Id bump into a bloke out on the green lanes he was on a crf 250 road legal with all the L plates slapped on it. I dont see him much now since a car killed my dtr 125 but he said that you restrict the bike then get it to the dyno, they give you a certificate saying its below 30kw, you show it to the insurance and job is a good. (then take the restriction STRAIGHT BACK OUT !!!!) Then burn rubber.

  3. hi all not so long ago i rebuilt an xt 550 with the hope of passing my test and hitting the road with it. the snag was me and my lass got our first place together, and by god you learn the true meaning of money. and as i cant afford the lessons i already have a cbt i was thinking of restricting the bike down to 33 bhp. can any one give me any advice as how to go about this particularly how much the insurance would be i can imagine it would be pretty steep. thanks very much

  5. Hi all Im just about ready to send the crankshaft from my xt 550 away to get a new con rod fitted. Now the angel on one shoulder says buy a new crank pin. the devil on the other shoulder says if there is no play on the original pin, your fitting a new baring anyway, refit it. Im trying to keep the costs down as this bike is starting to burn a hole in my pocket. anyone got any advice for me ??

  8. not quite sorry I should have been more specific you can rock the pin in the bush but strangely enough no up and down movement the pin fits into the bush without any resistance. thanks blackhat
  9. hi all Im on re building the engine for my xt 550 as I was replacing the piston I found that the little end bush was well past its best. the replacment piston and pin are second hand but ther are in fine condition and the replacment con rod is brand new. the problem is when you slid the pin into con rod there is play between them, very slight but there is play. im thinking that maybe that play is nessesary as when the engine heats up to operating temp and parts expand that clearance will be taken up, i suppose that if the two parts are a perfect fit they would lock up at opperating temp anone got any advice on this for me would be great.
  10. hi all I have an xt 600 1983 ish to look at the front cover of the clymer manual the bike on in the picture is the same as mine. and the information in the manual matches the mechanics of the bike. I dont have the my logbook or manual with me. The reason for this is im looking at a nice exhaust silencer on e bay but not sure if it will fit my frame but I really want it can anyone tell me the model number plese
  11. hi all i wonder if anyone can tell me if the dt 175 and the dtr 125 share the same bottom end or at least the same bottom end components? the reason for this is i am thinking of putting an athena 170cc kit onto my dtr 125. cynic tells me that this will put the 125 specification bottom end under too much strain in the long run and i think he is right. so in summery is the dtr125 simply a dt 170 with a smaller 125 top end? thanks
  12. thanks for the the picture dirtydt. if you look at the object between the head and the power valve it looks to me to be a flywheel, and if it is it is the wrong type for the dtr. i guess it will be left out? thanks cynic If memory serves the very first model dt1 came out the same time as the xt 500 and was a 175 until the the british government brought out the CBT 125 cc law. yamaha responded by bringing out the dtr 125. i wonder if they simply put a 125cc top end onto the existing 175 bottom end?
  13. hi all just a little question about the athena 170 piston kit for the dtr e 125. i cant quite get my head around how the cylinder bolts on to the crankcase. i would imagine that the cylinder should have a larger diameter hence 170cc and on the net the pictures show the kit comes with its own studs why take the old studs out has anyone else fitted these before and would it but the crank bearings and the rest of the bottom end components under too much strain? thanks every one
  14. you are right there gynic but its extremely profitable, how much money do you think is spent in a year on keeping internal combustion engines lubed and fueled? that's a lot of money to be made. i never thought of l.p.g that's an idea the fuel tank would be quite heavy, aluminium probably not take the pressure. if money was no issue titanium would have a high strength to weight ratio higher than alluminium.
