  1. I've been lurking and reading plenty on here since I bought my first bike back in May last year but have failed to introduce myself so here goes: Hi all! I'm Nick, a 28 yr old software engineer from London. By software engineer I basically mean I swear at computers and mobile phones all day and google constantly to understand what the hell I'm actually doing. Bought a YBR 125 custom second hand last year and loving it. Bike is sadly off road atm since someone backed into it but Im itching to get riding again. Hoping to get a license in the next couple of months and Im sure I'll end up upgrade to something a little beefier...
  2. haha, sorry guys, I'm sure i had an introductory post ages back... but apparently not! I shall go and fix that tomorrow (been up in scotland for a few days with no internet). I've mostly just been lurking reading peoples advice and crazy stories
  3. Hi all, I'm after some advice with getting a Cat C write off back on the road. It's a YBR 125 custom, first bike, bought second hand for about £1400. I had a *very* minor accident a few months back. Was parked on the road and a big SUV backed into the bike, knocking it into another bike. The damage to mine looked very minimal (dented the instrument panel I'd only recently replaced(!), a broken indicator light, some minor scratches). The other bike was a lot worse off, and when I found the bike neither driver was there so I reported it to my insurer and the police to cover my back... a week later the car driver got in touch, was unreservedly apologetic and said his third party insurance would cover all repairs. To cut a long story short, they took the bike off me, gave me a courtesy one and 3 weeks later sent it back saying they'd given it a cat C write-off, valued it as £500 salvage and gave me a cheque for a grand. I'm still not sure how good/bad that outcome is! There was some damage from a previous minor accident - no insurance involved that time, I had it checked out at a dealer and got a few things replaced but left the stuff that was purely cosmetic. The insurer didn't ask for any details of what was actually damaged this time so I imagine they just quoted for replacing everything with a minor scratch on it. I had to cancel the insurance as my insurer won't cover bikes with write offs. I then spent another 3 weeks trying to get the engineer's report to see what actually needs fixing, and eventually just got a sheet with absolutely no info apart from basically "body parts £1200... labour £400... definitely a write off"! Having cheked around with insurers and the DVLA, it seems that I don't actually have to get a VIC or even an MOT to be legal, but the insurers I found that would cover it again wanted an MOT and I want to make sure its roadworthy. I've driven it about a bit off road and it seems the same as it ever was. Bars and forks look straight. Should I take it to a garage and get another damage report? This will apparently be about £25, plus I'll have to pay £40-50 each way to get it to the garage and back since its not insured. Or should I just book it straight in for an MOT and take it from there? I'm also not sure when it comes to re-insuring it what I should put for the value of the bike. It is/was worth about £1500... do I stick with that or knock it down? Do I go as far down as the write off value? I just want to get the damn thing back on the road! Cheers for the advice in advance.
  4. First just thought I'd say hi since this is my first post. Have been lurking around reading for a while but haven't posted yet, so hi everyone! 27yr old first time biker as of three or four months ago. I've got a YBR 125 custom 2009. Bought it second hand and luckily it did actually run . Everything seemed fine for the first few months. I then had a minor fall in some torrential rain which resulted in some expensive repairs (and lessons very much learnt!) but it's been running fine since. Then last week, it just failed to start... Turning the ignition would give anything between no power at all, to everything coming on (lights, dash, engine warning light turns on then off). But, on occasions where it appears to start, starting the engine with the electric start kills all power instantly. The starter appears to 'click' but power goes dead straight after. Interestingly, pulling the front brake has the same effect, so I imagine its that any drain on the battery (starting engine or turning on brake light) kills it. The dash lights would actually fade on/off sometimes when trying to start or wiggling the steering which makes me suspicious its a dodgy wore somewhere. If the neutral light does come on, it will start fine with the kickstart (luckily, since I had to drive it 4 miles home after the first time it stopped). The battery is theoretically 2 years old, though who knows in reality. I've got a haynes manual so have done a bit of testing following that: voltage across the battery seems fine (a little over 13v). battery doesn't look damaged. cleaned of a little bit of corrosion on the positive terminal. took the front light off and tested voltage to the ignition via starter motor which seems fine. tested continuity through ignition switch, no resistance. checked continuity in battery neg to earth/frame wire and that seems good. Any tips on what to do/check next greatly appreciated! I can't find any info on actually checking current from the battery. Im no mechanic or electrician, but I imagine it can hold charge and still not be supplying sufficient current... I think I ought to just get the battery properly tested (and maybe replaced)... any recommendations where to do this (cheaply!) in London, UK? Cheers in advance, I'm itching to get back on the road!
