Sounds kind a normal. I suspect there is a variation of where the compression cycle starts, If you find the start of the compression, then let go of the kick start lever, I am thinking their will be a chance for a full range of motion. Hope that helps, I have a XS400, I have notice that the compression varies from time to time.
