    First big bike

I'm on a YBR125 at the moment, probably going to do my test around february time... soon as that's done i'd like to get a bike that actually goes! don't get me wrong, the YBR is pretty awesome as a learner, but as soon as you get on anything fast... not a chance. So what do you guys reckon I should look at? I'm 19 now so I'll be restricted to 33bhp - not much but 3x the power I'm running at the moment! So I'm thinking a 500 twin or something that'll restrict well but still have plenty of grunt ive been looking at the kawasaki gpz500 and honda cb500s (sacrilege! not a yamaha )... and im 6'2" and around 80kg, so I don't reall wanna be too cramped! Cheers Gary
  2. so yeah, i wouldn't suggest a theif use a hacksaw, took about a half hour to get through it! and I had to use a screwdriver (carefully) to bend the rest of it outta the way so i could get it off... oh, and it was an oxford titan disk lock. I've just got a chain now, seems much better! let's hope...
  3. i went home at lunch, i guess when its maybe above freezing, and it coughed and spluttered and eventually woke up! albeit briefly... i think (as you say) the carb was just iced up despite it being garaged! one panic over, now just to sort out the brakes... what do you mean by push the brake calliper against the disc? just pull the brake lever?
  4. i do - not quite sure what's happening!
  5. uh huh, not sure the landlord will appreciate it though... feck it. just can't wait to get on it again!
  6. OK cheers - makes sense as it's been there nearing on 3 weeks the electrics came on fine when I turned it on, lights and everything, when I pressed the start button it turned over fine but just didn't spark - i tried giving it a bit of throttle and it sparked once then died again. to be fair it does usually take a while to warm up as its only little, i have to leave it on choke for a good few minutes! maybe just a tiny bit of water vapour that's frozen somewhere... I might wait til it gets above -7 before trying to start it again!
  7. FINALLY got it off. attacked it witha junior hacksaw to get through the pin and then it came off... yay! BUT. now the bike wont start and the front wheel's all squeaky/doesn't turn great... help again? it's not going well.
  8. just read this - annoyingly enough I live in Basingstoke but I'm working up in Cambridge, bike's up here too! fancy a roadtrip ?
  9. Cheers for the help guys... I attacked it over the weekend with wd40, then screwdriver to no avail... next stop drill, the drill bits just made a bit of a noise and didnt do much - maybe testament to my skills (or lack of) in lockpicking/drilling... next stop angle grinder! and i have to admit thermite would be fun, but i'd prefer to keep my tyres/garage. =]
  10. Went to get on my bike today, had to remove the disc lock first... it was being a bit stubborn so I tried forcing it (idiot that I am) and managed to snap the key off in the lock. What is the best way of removing it without damaging the disc brake itself? I don't have a spare key as i got it with the bike when I bought it... Help!
  11. I did my cbt on a ybr, had the same problem... funnily enough it was about 2 months newer than the one I've got sitting in my garage (registered Feb 07) but that doesn't seem to have any problems. Saying that, I cbt'd 2 days ago and went on a nice long bimble yesterday for 50 miles or so - I'm in cambridge so it was a little busy in the middle of town on a saturday, so I went and explored the fens! i'm going down to london next week to visit a mate, what's driving like there? busy, obviously, but do you just have to keep sharp to avoid people? Gary
  12. Just got myself a ybr125, i'm new to biking, got my cbt at the end of the week! I was wondering if anyone knows anything about screens or handguards for it? I'm starting to ride in November - maybe not the cleverest thing ever - and I'm not too keen on getting battered by the english elements! any suggestions? Cheers
