  1. Hi CB, Might be nice if you did and INTRO BEFORE asking questions, most will help but not if you just rock up and bluntly ask, just ask yourself how you would feel if some stranger asked for help out of the blue and you had no idea who they were or even if they were honest, not suggesting your not but some want answers and then never come back, this is NOT some place you come to just to ask questions it's about people who love to ride and love their Yam and are interested in what others do to their bikes and how to get the most fun out of doing what they love.

    nuff said. :eusa_whistle:

PS go to "new member" section and tell all. but DON'T ask questions there.

  2. Hi Si and welcome to the YOC, now that's what I call a proper intro, as your new to biking I should just stick to what you know and if your happy riding nearer the kerb then do that and take your mates advice with a pinch of salt, it's fine when your more proficient but for now make your self as small a target as you can, ok wet visor (I asume you mean foggy from breathing?) well you have to breath but try a cheap method of a potato cut in half and rubbed on the inside of the visor or there are some sprays you can buy that do a similar job others on here will know the best ones, hill starts are at best only advised on when your there to see the problem but find a nice quiet road (that has a hill!) and just practice same as a car but you just need to find the bite point of the clutch and open the throttle SLOWLY until your off and running, cornering in the wet is another of those really difficult things to advise on, how wet is to wet? if you mean puddles then go round them and NOT through them if you mean damp then it's easy the first time it slides out from under you then your going to fast, not really helpful but it's difficult to be precise when your not there and don't know how you drive. I would suggest that if your really worried then get on a traning course run by bikers they will help you gain confidence and make sure you ride within your skill. Other than that have fun it's a thrill every time you ride your bike and not something you should fear. Martin :jossun:

  3. Hi Ian, Far as I know the 600 and 900 are similar but NOT the same some mods to the 900 but essentially there should be no difference between the 2 in the ignition circuit,I would suggest that you concentrate only on the starter and ign wiring as anything else would be pointless if you just want to test it, you will need to earth it and have a battery but otherwise that's about it, you can do with out the starter button if you want and just short over the starter relay should do no harm if the bike is easy to start but if not use the starter button as damage to the starter relay will happen if you keep it shorted for prolonged periods. So you will need the starter wiring, the ignition circuit wiring and the battery curcuit wiring as a minimum I would think. Hope that helps and I have not forgotten some thing obvious. :jossun:

  4. Might be an earth not connected properly or your starter motor brushes might be worn, plus of course the dreaded dud battery, if you leave your bike outside the battery can fail in the cold weather, or maybe the connections on your starter button, any of these or a combination of them all.

  5. Don't think about it otherwise you will find all sorts of reasons not to do it like who's going to cook my tea and stuff, just go for it you might even get a really good bike instead of just a runner.

  6. Nothing wrong with them as such just different planets of origin, like a mate told me once just before I got married, what do lobster thermadore and oral sex have in common? answer you don't get either when your married. OH FUCK I really should have listened " I like lobster". :hah:

  7. Have you checked the relay that sits behind the front panel, the one that monitors the output to the plug I believe that it is an overload relay but if it is blown the generator can;t supply power to the ignition. I bought a load of them from Argos Returns some years ago and had the same/similar problems. :eusa_whistle:

  8. Hi, On my XJ the air box is a bloody great thing that gets in the way of everything when you try to work on the carbs, you can get it out but it is a right bastard to do, if you remove the carbs AND the carb mounting tube things (can't remember the name of them) you can draw the air box forward from it's place inside the frame but that's it you cannot get it to turn so you can remove it, I would suggest that you get a hack saw (no joke) and saw off the end where the air filter goes, other wise you can take the HEAD'S OFF to remove the thing but that is a bit extreme just to fit K&Ns to your bike, the ONLY way I have found to get it out is to take the engine out and that's just bloody ridiculous, as foamy say's tuck the breather pipe out of the way and it should cause you no problems but DON'T kink it, the battery box/tray thing is not part of the air box so you should be able to ignore that. It really is a stupid way to design something it looks like a bit of an afterthought :jossun:

  9. Hi koop and welcome to the YOC, if I were you I would think about introducing yorself first BEFORE asking for advice! Some people don't mind you just asking for help up front but most like to know who they are talking to before they help out. Just think about it, if your in a pub and ask a total stranger how to fix your bike they will tell you to fuck off or ask you to step outside for a robust discussion about your manners, so I suggest that you go to the "new members" section and tell everyone who you are BEFORE asking for help. Or not, that's up to you. :jossun:

  10. Having just rebuilt and reprayed 2 of these things the first thing to do is look at the wiring, as usual it will be the yamaha horror show under the seat, loose connections and bodges from previous owners, I wish you luck! If you really want to dump the rack then give me a call and a price I don't mind if it's sissy I need one. Martin.

  11. Hi Livsey, on my XJ the Chrome surround has 2 philips screws that serve as retainers and adjusters, before adjusting them I would suggest that you whip the headlight off and oil and clean the screw threads as they are usually covered in crud and rust, other than that it's quite easy to get the lights set up. :jossun:

P.S. Sorry should have also said that there are 2 screws underneath the cowling that actually hold the headlamp surround in place, up underneath the lower trim

  12. Hi Thumper, check the fuel lines first and make sure they are ok, they can get blocked same with the fuel tap filter. Pipes can collapse under pressure so if they are a bit old and knackered change them out. might I suppose be a blocked jet but then it would do it in all gears and not just 5th also check the gaskets around the carb to make sure they are not split (to much air) other than that your on your own with out more info to go on. :jossun:
