  1. I'd consider cleaning the carb again... I know on my DT175 I cleaned the carb, i was having issues. So i cleaned it again real attentively and it fired up and sounded better then ever before. Use the straw on the carb clean and shoot it in every single hole you can find...Then blow it out with air. Also, soak the floats in a cup of gas...see if they sink or take on fuel... shake them around a little bit. Some carburetors are just a little harder to clean.
  2. I'm thinkin there's still something in the carb.. I mean it can't hurt to clean it again. How does the inside of the tank look? And ya know... maybe you should buy a book or something on this bike because it can't be good to just start cranking the adjustment screws around... And if your worried about rings, run a compression test on it.. both wet and dry.
  3. could be a few things...Is there fuel getting into the carbureteor? I've gotten into the habbit of running clear lines, (along with an inline fuel filter) from the tank to the carb.. Maybe un screw the bolt and see if it's full and/or possibly full of debris.. You probably just need a good cleaning. How long has the bike been sitting?
  4. awesome... thank you! I've been battling this bike since last summer. I had it in the shed for the winter and just pulled it out. Sometimes all you need is a fresh start on a project to regain your oomph on it.
  5. I drained the oil on my 74 dt 175 and I think i could smell gas in the oil... What could cause that? Running it too rich?
  6. I have the air at 2 1/4 and the idle at 1 1/2. I did just replace the cable too. when i rode it and it ran good it was with the old cable. So i guess i'll be checking that again. Thanks for the help! It just seemed weird, but the oil injection and the cable were the only things i did after i had it running decent already, so it kind of narrows it down to those two.
  7. Well My carb doesn't have a port for an oil line. I only have the one small line that goes into the crankcase. Here's a pic. and the routing. When i replaced the throttle cable i followed the manual on priming whereas i spun the wheel with the screw out until clear oil was coming out. Maybe i should disconnect the lines and try some premix? i Don't know....
  8. I've been workin on getting my dt 175 running mint. I cleaned the carb, replaced the bowl drain gasket, petcock gasket, kreemed the tank reinstalled the oil injection lines that the p.o cut and blocked, changed the air filter, replaced the boot between filter and carb and got all new clamps, replaced the gaskets on top of the carb on either side of the thing that screws onto the carb. Before i did anything, i cleaned the carb out, bolted it on as is, and poured a little bit of gas in there. I didn't really premix it with any type of measuring, but i did add oil. It ran pretty good. Then after i got the oil injection on there working, it started idling really high like 4 grand. I figured it was an air leak so thats when i changed the boot and clamps. Still high idle. Just wondering if the oil injection could have anything to do with it. Is it possible i didn't bleed it right or it's not working at all? The fact that it ran good with out it, and now like crap is mind boggling. At first start up the idle isn't too high, but after riding it for like 3 seconds the bike is real boggy and then it started revving higher and higher. Could it just be a case of adjusting the throttle cable? Everyone keeps telling me to spray around with carb clean or something like that, but with it already idling at 4 grand i'd rather not. Any point in the right direction would be much appreciated, thanks!
  9. how does the plug look? Maybe the thing just flooded out. snap a pic of the plug though and post it up... did you set the air screw to 2 1/2 and the the idle to just get it running about 1 1/2?
  10. I don't think that's a 4 year old. my votes for a midget
  11. Is the spark nice and strong? I had a similar problem where my bike ran fine at lower rpms, but once revved up it'd lose power fast. Turned out to be one winding on the primary coil had corosion. Took off that one wind around and problem solved. Also, take a picture of your carb and post it up, is it dirty at all? maybe the screw is just hidden or something..
  12. that's the most epic thing i've ever seen. Half the time he looks confused... like, "why am i doing this, could i look any gayer?"

    1974 DT 175

that's what i though, thanks. someone told me it was a return, which i wasn't buying... a vent sounds much much better.

    1974 DT 175

i hate to ask but on the oil tank, there's two lines coming from it. I'm guessing one is feeding the pump and the other is a vent? the feed is a given, but i wasn't sure if there was a return or maybe just a vent. Just want to be sure.
  15. You tried a few different spark plugs right? Somethings funky. I'd check all connections a few times. Unplug and replug them in, twist them around a little bit if you can. cleaning a carb shouldn't affect spark.

    1974 DT 175

Well the tank was empty, and has been for years. So I'd consider it safe. When I go to weld it again I'll rinse it out with water then let it sit for a few days. and when I did ride it, the tank was off. I bought the 25 feet because it was cheap and I'll have plenty left fit other bikes.

    1974 DT 175

i'm hoping so, i just ordered some throttle cables and 25 feet of fuel line and a couple fuel filters to finish it off. I found a parts bike that had a chain guard, the plastic under the oil tank and a few nuts and bolts that i needed. I also tried welding up the gas tank holes and still have a little seepage. I was going to just kreem it and hope that it sealed it, but i think i'll weld another pass on it. Either way in the next few weeks i'd like to have it in the woods.

    1974 DT 175

Fired it up beautifuly, I poured some gas down the fuel line, pulled the choke on, 2 kicks later it started. Idled around 3k but man was it good to hear going. Sounded strong, i don't want to ride it until i get the tank cleaned out and installed so i can get some premix in her, but all in all i'm happy. I timed it with a dial indicator. Then made some marks just in case. Revved it to about 5 or so thousand and it sounded mint, loud with out a muffler, but mint. Thanks everyone for the help!
  19. I just found the site i was looking for.... http://dirtbike.off-road.com/dirtbike/review/yamaha-vintage-dirt-bike-id-guide-21792.html So it appears that i got a 1975 dt 175B, a 1977 DT 100D, and possibly a 72, or 73 LTMX. The zuk's year is beyond me at this point.
  20. Well i lucked out. The guy who sold me the bikes was pretty wrong about the suzuki's they weren't rm "175" . One of them wasn't even a zuk, it was a yamaha. Got the vin number 443-110972. Best i can tell, it's probably a 74 DT 175 maybe. The other one happened to be a ts 125. As for the DT 100's, ones a 77' DT 100'd. Vin 1t9 005142, the other one is a ??? Vin number LT2 006833. No idea on that one, the LT2 Didn't show up anywhere. I'll take some pictures sooner or later. I thought i remember seeing a list with all the model identifications with it, but i can't seem to find it. Anyone think they could piont me in the right direction?

    1974 DT 175

i finally got a nice strong spark out of her. I found a stator on ebay for 35 bucks, it just came in today. I bolted it on and plugged it in, got nothing. I put my new points in it, then the points started arching. So i changed the condensor. And of course the black wire was too short so i cut it back and soldered in a new wire. Then i realized that pretty much the whole harness on the "new" stator were cracked and frayed and whatnot, so i cut all the wires and soldered in the old harness, shrink wrapped. After i plugged it in, the points were still arching, i kept one workin the magneto back and forth and bam, nice strong constant spark. I'm pumped. Plus i got the air filter in the mail today, so hopefully sometime in the next week i can hear her run. Thanks for all the help!
  22. Well it's like 620 some odd miles round trip. Not really desperate at all. Was fiendin for a road trip and a couple of souveneirs... But i was hoping to get the other 3 as well to make it a little more worth while. But either way it'll be a fun day and hopefully i'll be able to get a few running bikes out of the deal.
  23. I was lookin at a few bikes on ebay. 3 seperate auctions. one auction for two 70's dt 100's, one auction for 2 suzuki rms and one for 3 part bikes with out motors, or much else really. Those were a 70's kx 250 from the looks of it, and maybe two dt's. I lost the 3 But won the rm's and the dt's. My plan was to try and get one running bike out of each pair and then part out the rest of the other one. I'm going to get them on sunday, i gotta rent a uhaul and drive about 500 miles to get em but i'm down for an adventure! and the price was definately right for all 4. The zuk's are a litle odd by looking at the pictures, First off the guy said that they looked like a 175 size motor. I may be wrong but i wasn't aware of a rm 175... All bikes are missing a few things here and there, but all in all, a hundred bucks for all 4 plus travel expenses, seemed right to me! I'll snap some pics after i get them home! Just wanted to share my early excitement before i pick them up and realize they're far worse then i thought ha ha.
  24. maybe the timings off a little bit.
