  1. I have the same problem with mine with a few exceptions. I have stock everything, just had the carbs cleaned, air filter needs to be replaced (but isnt terrible yet), my hesitation begins at 4K and goes away at 5k. I've read that it is one of 2 problems, either the Air Filter or it is running too lean. When you figure yours out let me know so that I can do the same to mine. Thanks!
  2. OK Thank you for your comment and sorry that it has been so long. It turns out that I had a bad connection between the fuse and fuse holder. I tried to bend the holder in to hold the fuse tighter. BIG MISTAKE!! Don't try that on any old bikes! So after I broke it I went to the auto parts store and got an inline fuse holder and that worked with no problem.
  3. I don't know about the handlebars, but it sounds ok. LOL
  4. Hi, it has been a long while since I have been on but here is my question; My 1983 maxim 400 has blueed exhaust pipes where they hook up to the engine. Could this be because of sticking exhaust valves or timing? I have been thinking of getting a new exhaust but dont want to if they are just going to over-heat. My other question is that between 3k - 4k RPM it hesitates pretty hard going up small hills. Is that normal, or is there a problem with the carbs? Let me know guys. Thanks!
  5. Congrats on your bike, I wish that I hook help you out so email me if I can help out with anything other than the engine. I have an '83 XS 400 Maxim so join the club LOL. [email protected]
  6. So I got back home tonight, at dusk, pulled into the garage and noticed I have no headlight. Seeing as how I have no lights in my garage, I have not tested a thing yet, aside from seeing if any other lights were out. Could I ask for some information, such as part numbers and likely causes etc. My other problem is that when riding the bike hesitates between 4k and 5k RPM, is that normal or is there something messed up in the carbs? If someone can talk me through this, I would greatly appreciate it.
  7. Hi everyone, I'm back! My Dad and I dilligently worked on my 82 xs400 and she runs great and is a lot of fun to ride. I think I am falling in love with her (don't tell my wife!!). Well the problem I have now, and its very minor and not a deal breaker at all, is that when riding, it hesistates between 4k and 5k but it seems like it only does it in 3rd and 4th gears. It's no deal breaker and I won't be getting rid of it because of it either. If anyone can let me know, that would be fantastic, and one of these days I'll post photos of my beautiful baby.

    I'm back

Ok so last night my dad and I put the carbs back on the bike and took it for a ride. It ran very well and as some of you know, I just put a new clutch in it and it was doing well also. I get back to my dad's house and he jumps on it and takes it for a ride. He gets back and says the clutch needs adjusted a little more. I loosen the nut, back off the screw and NO clutch! At this point I said, "no problem, we'll just take off the cover and see what's going on". You would think that wouldn't be a problem to do but NO! We loosened all the screw/bolts until we got to the one at the top left. At once it stripped out. To make a long story short, you wouldn't know that it ever had a screw head on it, it looks like the head was in a wood chipper! Just a funny story but seriously, it bothers me to think that Yamaha, back then, would have been so short sighted as to put a soft metal bolt in there with a screw head. Come on guys!
  9. Any ideas? Should I go to a different forum? Is this place dead?
  10. Any change in status? I have an 82 xs400 too and need all the info that I can get.
  11. So what's the status of your bike now. I think I may have the same problem. I don't really know for sure though.
  12. I agree with you there it probably has a lot to do with the side kicksstand. Have you tried it on only the center stand?
  13. So I put a new clutch in it and so far so good, however I ran into a new problem! After riding for about half an hour it stalled out. I checked the fuel and it was all good. I started it back up no problem. Rode it about a half mile and it did it again, after I came to a stop while using the front brake lever. I made it home and after pulling in the drive it stalled out again. I did another oil change today before my ride and it smelled strongly of gas. I could smell gas after the ride as well. What's going on with this now?! Also, the battery has been dead every time that it sits for more than a day, and it's brand new. Otherwise it runs well. Please someone help me!!!!! Could it be the regulator? Could it be the carb? Oh and what's with the the petcock having only 3 positions (ON, PRI, and RES). I noticed that the only one where fuel comes out is PRI.
  14. I hadn't thought of the cable idea so I'll give it a try. The other bike is a 1980 xs 400 special II so some of it wont go together, but good idea otherwise.
  15. Alright sorry it has been so long. I played around with the clutch adjustmentsat the top and bottom, but it didn't make any difference. I know the previous owner had used it as a learning bike so the clutch is probably shot. I'm going to order one today from Midway Yamaha, the brand is called "Factory". Is that a good brand or should I look for something else? On a side note, I have found an 80 xs 400 special II for $300, but it hasn't been started since the early nineties. Let me know what you think of that too.
