  1. I did look at the flatside you had mentioned however it appears there is no links to the both.... So the 750 tank will fit with no fabbing...the people at mikesXS told me otherwise but they are douchebags and I will believe you instead. This bike is very very particular about its carb settings and It seems like a simple machine....its not! I have read numerous sites on the cleaning of these carbs and have done it to specs, but to no avail. I am getting frustrated man! I just dont want to go through another hassle of having the tank rust....cleaning out the carbs again....ect. Patience is def a virtue in this matter! McMunzell
  2. Will I have to fab it on if I find it? and where can you find flat sides? just wondering....thanx mcmunzelll
  3. Hello everyone... After getting a steel tank off ebay and having to clean the rust out AGAIN...it RUSTED OVER AGAIN. SO........ I called Air-Tech and asked them about a PLASTIC OR FIBERGLASS TANK. I am also getting White smoke out of the left stock pipe...and not on the right. Does anyone know the dimensions to get a fabricated tank? Has anyone done this before? And...What in gods name is all of that WHITE SMOKE when its Air cooled? I know Blue means Im burning Oil....but WHITE??? Also...Im sick to death of these shitty Mikuni carbs...so god damn temperamental. Is there any other carbs that would fit on the 400xs that I could buy NEW??? Having Mad Trouble..... Mcmunzell/
  4. SWEET! Thanks J! I will lookem up in the parts catalog..... McMunzell
  5. I was just going to run straight pipes....but that would sound like a 747 landing in the front yard.... Too loud ya think?
  6. I dont have either.... I just turned em to 2.5 out....and fired it. Seems to have helped. They were at .5 turns! Oh and one other thing....I want to take all of the air box gayness off and put two "cone style" air filters on the back. Do you know if they make them for this carb, and would it affect performance of carb.....meaning having to re-jet. And one other thing...I have the stock exhaust on it and was looking all over for a performance exhaust for it. This one is so quiet....I need something a bit louder to at least give people the oppertunity to hear me! just wondering.
  7. so theres a chance it doesnt need re-jetting? I will try 2.5 turns. The factory decided back in the day to cover the idle mixture screws for some reason...STUPID. I ripped the cover off of them out and only have one turn to seated. I guess I should turn em out to 2.5 to 3. I will try for revs sake.... That re wiring is WAY out of my understanding. Im gonna risk getting a new one. thanks

    79 400 xs..

Hey everyone... I just got done with douching my tank in acid...cleaning out the carbs...new plugs...etc. Here is the problem. I am getting good throttle response, but the RPMS are slow to drop. I did read that you probably need to re-jet the carb, however I have searched the internet high and low to find out what Mikuni carb I actually have on the bike. I tried to order stuff for the 400 from MikesXS, however they are acting like pieces of shit and send sarcastic emails back because they only deal with 650's. Does anybody know which stock carb came with the 79? and Does anybody know if the 650xs indicator switch will work with the 400xs? and Does anyone know if I need to lean it out or fatten it up with the jets and which ones to get? these were the questions I had to MikesXS to order stuff from them, however they are acting like dumbshits. I appreciate the help. Thank you Mcmunzell
  9. Done that....John... Why do the people at MIKESXS never get back to you and when they do...they are a buncha wanks on the email? Just wondering if a 650xs indicator switch would work on a 400....thats all i could find!
  10. Thank you for the responses. I dunked the tank in pure acid and it took everything out including metal. I then put 2 stroke and gas oil mix to coat for flash rust and then dried it out. Worked like oiled tits. thank you. As for the carbs...I did take the float bowls off and then the others. I douched the main jets and pilot...looked pretty damn clean on the inside! I have two filters I use....put the new ones back on. The bike runs like a screaming banshee that took his morning shit with coffee. Thank you. There is the proverbial turn signals. I did do and check everything you said to do. I have NO CURRENT to the left at all. I hear a "click" when going to the right...and nothing going to the left. The volt meter said 0 on left. I checked higher up...and then higher up....zero current. Im thinking the switch gave the ass and a new one is in order...thoughts? I could care less if the indicator blinks (which it does not), I just want both to work. Getting tired of the boys harassing me saying "PAPERS PLEASE" like it was pre WW2 Germany!
  11. Hey everyone. New to Yamaha forum. I have a 79 400 xs thats been sitting for 3 years. I just got back and the tank is varnished and rusted inside. Muriatic? Phosphoric? Vinegar? Coca-Cola? Dont know too much about cleaning carbs. I could use a bit of opinions on that. My right signal works. My Left does not. I hear a click when I go right. No click when it goes left. I switched bulbs. Same thing. Right works. Left nothing. I put volt meter...getting 12v current to the right when switch goes right. No current to the left when switched left. Took apart switch. Sprayed and checked connections. Nothing corroded. All grounds are good. Switch or Flasher? Opinions are great. Thank you Mcmunzell
