  1. Questions: 1. During all my failed starting attempts have I nackered the battery (two of in parallel after its restore). You hooked up dual batteries? 2. is the idling issue due to the starting problems Poor idle can be caused by a low battery charge, clogged pilot jet, clogged main jet, dirty carb, weak coil, dirty plug, low octane fuel.. But I think you should buy a new spark plug and maybe a new rectifier/good rectifier to help with the charging problem you appear to be having 3. I can start it on the kick relatively easily, will this recharge the batterie(s) Well no. But it will save the battery the large charge loss caused by the electric starter. You should test the voltage at your battery terminal, should be like 14 amps at 4,000 RPMs.
  2. try some thread locker, or lock washers.
  3. yeah, so you bought a performance exhaust for a 50cc scooter? anyway.. you'll have to put more fuel into the engine if the exhaust is supposed to make the scooter go FASTER. Unless it has black smoke coming out the exhaust when its running, which indicates its too rich to begin with, which is highly unlikely. So I'd suggest taking that carb off and buying idle and main jets, 5 and 10 sizes bigger and expirementing. also increase the fuel mixture, more fuel. Also it could just be a spark plug, when they are going out they kill the engine under load, i'd suggest a new plug first.
  4. did you repack them??? did it work out ??? I am considering a repack job on mine. gman
  5. that is the fastest front loader ive ever seen
  6. well if its working then i would think so, but it might be on its way out.
  7. yeah probably, id just buy the next years cable? 1982 or 1980 whichever bike is closest looking
  8. cool bike, i used to have one. why not take that paint off the engine and polish the aluminum underneath?
  9. nah, usually you just swap out the fiber friction plates. but you should clean the steel ones.
  10. You would have to take the low beam wire and put a 4 way connector on it. To that 4 way connector you would plug in the positive from the left headlight and the right headlight, then on the 4th connection you would plug in the high beam wire.
  11. headlight fuse might be blown.. wire might have come loose in the switch?
  12. what about a compression test? valves arnt opening or closing properly? have you seen the cylinder 4 spark plug spark? have you ran the bike then taken the number 4 spark plug out and checked that there's petrol on it?
  13. maybe it needs a little help? try some starting fluid. might have too much 2 stroke oil in the gas. engines love ether. Also the screw should be turned back 1 and a half turns or so.
  14. go mix some seafoam into the gas. local auto store. but youll never get it running well without taking those carbs apart.
  15. Picked up a project, 2002 YZ 250. They rode it without coolant and blew a nickel sized hole through the center of the piston. The guy I picked it up from said the radiator had a slow leak. I have no idea where. So far I've cleaned out the metal shavings from the crank case and am preparing to bore it. But when I drained the oil, it was the color of chocolate milk. Light brown, completely. I know this isn't normal. My dad said when he broke the engine on his chevrolet tahoe, water got into the engine causing the oil to turn light brown. I think the radiator somehow leaked into the oil? So far my plan is to replace all the gaskets... any ideas appreciated.
  16. unplug the speedometer cable from the speedometer then spin the front tire, or just roll the bike forward. Make sure the cable spins, if it doesn't you either need to take apart the front brake and align the gears again or a new speedometer cable.
  17. well. i googled the part number and got nothing. bikebandit has nothing. ebay has nothing. northwest vintage cycles has nothing. are you near a bike salvage yard? i'd head on over. ftr - 248-14718-30-00
  18. and as far as a price, it should be $150-$200 USD for a new tire and inner tube to be mounted on each wheel professionally.
  19. not restored, found on craigslist from a guy that had it sitting in his yard under a cycle cover for however many years. He was very aggrivated with it and sold it for 400$ with the title, new tires, new brake pads. I jumped on it and picked it up, and this is how it stands now. I think I'm going to sell it and keep my xs 750. What I did to it was flush the brake system with new fluid, and bleed both brakes, rebuilt the carbs and jetted them (stock) it was too rich which is why it'd barely run. It works perfect. Idles like a clock and quickly responds to the throttle. Been a pleasure riding around town.
  20. i did it and it did nothing. so maybe both r/r's are bad but, after I tried the GS rectifier I tried my xs 400 rectifier which I unplugged from the bike so it does work, but it did nothing too. So I'm not sure what to make of this. The rectifier on the xs 750 with the charging problem does work a little, but not much. you can't use the electric start because it wont recover that much voltage. It charges about half as much as it should. also the bike has 20,700 miles.
  21. Can I transplant the R/R from a 1980 Suzuki GS 550 onto a 1979 Yamaha XS 750 Special? They are both 12 volt systems, and the R/R's both have 5 wires. I realize that the old GS series had a lot of R/R issues, but I think this one works. I just figure, a r/r is an r/r and it shouldn't make a difference. The purpose for doing this would be to solve a charging problem the yamaha has, and because it's the only rectifier I have lying around.
  22. definetly, just get a used clutch basket.
  23. does the problem go away after the bike is really warmed up? Also could be fuel flow, idle jets are sensitive to fuel levels, but i don't know if a XVS has EFI... if you have floats check the height, and that the fuel system is free of debris.
