  1. When I click on the New Topic icon, it gives me a box in the centre of the screen to enter the topic title and topic description, I can type in both of the boxes but nothing more. Its almost as though Im getting just half of the screen.
  2. Actually.....I cant seem to start a new topic in ANY section or forum....... please help !
  3. Actually, I paid 400 pounds for her. I think that was cheap, cos I love the damm thing already.
  4. Here you go - star bits: If you cool the bolt immediately after heating, you can run the risk of making it brittle, making it easier to snap, which creates another slight headache. If you heat and then allow to cool slowly, you are effectively Annealing the bolt, or tempering it, making it slightly tougher.
  5. Thats interesting actually. A very good friend of mine was out in a group in Lincolnshire a few weeks ago and they were caught with an average speed thingy doing 112 (stupid idiot I know - and he also knows). They all cleared off when they were waived down, but my mate was the only one to stop. The bobby issued him with a producer, and also told him he would receive a summons for the speed he was doing. From what I can deduce - : 1. He didnt receive a caution. 2. The average speed beacon was pointing at the group, he was 3rd in the group so there might not be credible evidence to support that it was him and only him. He might be able to get away with this one I think, if he plays it right. Im not applauding his silly speed and have already give him a rollocking and he is considering selling his bike for something a little calmer. If he gets a ban, he looses more than his licence as he is a self employed joiner and his income depends on his licence and he has a family to support.
  6. being a mechanical technician I come across this problem alot. One trick that always works for me is to find a decent quality stubby star bit that fits into a socket so you can use a ratchet. Find a star bit that is very slightly larger than the allen and drive it in with a hammer. The teeth on the star will cut themselves some grip and with gentle but firm pressure, the allen bolt will come out. Secondly, a trick with hex heads is if possible, heat the head until it is cherry red, then let it cool naturally, it will then sail out. Its OK spraying it with WD or whatever, but it takes a long time for the oil to penetrate, if at all, and applying heat and WD wont do alot other than make lots of nice smoke and smells ! You can drill bolts easily if you use a cobolt drill. Most bolts are only 8.8 and not the HT 9.6 or 10.2's unless it is engine mounts, engine internals, brake mountings or other stress areas. Even HT Bolts can be drilled if done correctly with the correct speed and pressure, but dont use an old drill bit as a blunt bit will just wear into the bolt and cause unnesessary heat. Another method is to put a good centre pop in the centre of the bolt head or inside the allen head. The focussed energy of the centre punch can sometimes loosen the bolt concerned. If this fails, at least you have a centre pop ready to drill and easy out. Hope this helps
  7. Im struggling with posting in the Wanted Section also. I have paid my membership and can get access to the private members area etc. When I am in the Wanted Section, I can click on the new topic icon and all I get is a box allowing me to enter the new topic title and topic description and nothing else........ Can someone help me with this please, unless im really dum and am missing something really obvious...... Thanks Pete
  8. Ive just managed to get my hands on a very cheap '81 xj550. She's a little rough at the edges and runs a bit lumpy but I reckon she is worth spending some money on and getting her put right. The clutch makes an awful racket, which seems to fade a bit when you pull the clutch lever in and the gearbox makes a nasty chattering noise at idle engine speeds when cold. The 5th & 6th gear wines like hell when cruising at around 40 - 50mph. The front brakes have been modified and something else has been put on, but they have been "washered" out to fit, and the front wheel has a spacer in it aswell, which makes my forks run slightly out of parallel ! The Carbs are slightly out of balance, but thats an easy fix. What I cant seem to find, is an online source other than ebay for spares. I realise its an old bike now, being 28 odd years old, but I need to find a good reputable dealer who can possibly lay his hands on bits and pieces at good prices. Im looking to maybe "streetfighter" it a little and maybe recreate that popular look from the '80s - custom paint, 4-1 short pipe, straight bars, headlight conversion you know what I mean, but I need to make sure she runs well and is safe before embarking on the big-spend. If anyone can give any advice at all, it would be very much appreciated. Heres a pic of the bike in its current form:
  9. Hi all, Ive just got my sticky paws on an old '81 XJ550. Not too bad but runs a bit lumpy and there are the inherant clutch noises and the odd oil leak, as you would expect from a bike this age. Im hoping to rebuild her as soon as I can, and modify her in a few ways, prob streetfighter her a bit. I thought I would join this forum as it looks a good place for info, and maybe even sourcing parts. Thanks for having me !
