  1. I just fitted a center stand from a Divvy - shipped from England of course (that part is very hard to find in the states). And YES- the rear tire is only lifted about an inch or so on the stand. I'm just happy to have it on ANY stand - taking a bike apart without one would be painful. Suprised it was not standard but an option for these bikes. The fairing, cowling and tank are now off. Rusty crud in the old gas removed. Carbs clogged for sure. Rear brake is grabbing - keeping tire from running freely. Starting carb cleaning and tank rust removal treatment, and overall clean/lube/adjust. Then new battery, oil & filter and should be ready to go. Dave Nope my XJ was a private sale - a friend had it in his garage since new... barely used and untouched the last few years - waited till the right time (took 2 years) till he sold it to me.
  2. Hey Andy - I'm going to give this stuff a try - as I have some bolts and other items that rusted while this bike was in storage: Evapo-Rust . I checked some reviews and they wrere good. I've used a similar product -Rusteco - it worked great but cost 3X the $$$. I also order a Yamaha carb cleaner: Part # ACC-CARBC-LE-NR. Threre is a nice page about cleaning the carbs and using this product at: Carb Clean Tips And to round things out I order a few fasters and new gaskets for the carbs at bikebandit.com. Once my manual arrives I'll start with the restoration - and when the center stand comes I'll be even in better shape. I just created a new web page dedicated to the XJ600s project under my signature. Cheers, Dave
  3. Hey all - any suggestions on removing light rust from a tank? I've used Rusteco in the past - it works great but is pricey - cus you really need a gallon of the stuff to do a good job...$100 for the liquid and $135 for the gel. You CAN re-use it -which is great but still procey. Rusteco I've also found a Yamaha product for $40 on CoolRetroBikes.com - a two part system - one removes the rust - the other coats the tank. I'm not a fan of coating gas tank at ALL - I think it's asking for trouble (short of a little motor oil - that's different.) Yamaha Rust remover/treatmment I don't want to use anything Toxic - my rust is pretty light. I flushed the tank out and it's ready for some type of treatment. Anyone and all thoughts appreciated.
  4. Thanks - I'd like to get the center stand that came as an option - especially for touring. The Dennis Kirk paddock stand runs $150 - is that a good price? All new to me....
  5. Hey all - Any idea of where I could get a center stand for my newly aquired 1991 Yamaha XJ600s Seca II? From what I've read - Yamaha did offer it as an option, but I can't find one anywhere - some 80's SECA stands are on ebay - but no Seca IIs. I can't imagine taking the bike apart without a center stand. Dave
  6. THANKS ALL - I've always admired the SECAs - and then this one was too good to pass up. Factory date is 10/91, sold to original owner in 1993 from dealer - then 2800 miles and 12 years later I got my hands on it. It's hard not to keep peaking at it in my garage....
  7. I'd also look at eBay - Parting out bikes and selling parts - or restoring and selling bikes. I know several folks who have started business on ebay - and have been able to shift their careers once they got started! Good Luck!

    I'm back too

I've just "converted" to commuting on my bike - and I have to say mentally I'm all the better for it. I fitted my daily driver - a 83 Suzuki GR650 with a Maier winsdcreen - and that made a big difference. If it's snowing or raining - then I'll drive - but even if it's cold, I'm riding. Cheers, dave
  9. Hey all - my name is Dave and I just aquired a 1991 Yamaha XJ600s "Seca II" w/ 2800 miles. It's been in storage for a while - needs a carb clean and going over. It's my #2 bike - as I've restored a 1983 Suzuki GR650 that is my daily rider. I'm looking at the "Seca II" as my budget sport tourer, and will get a set of soft bags for it after it's running - and do some extended trips next year. Anyway - great to find the club...will scout around for info on my new bike. Dave
