  1. Its the use of the word slips that is catching my eye. As OG is saying check out the clutch.

Gears don't slip especially at that kind of mileage. Jump, jam, lock, and any number of variations but it cannot slip.

Also although the bike will come apart easily enough (i know i know) considering the age of the bike and the (relative) rarity of the parts involved i would not be rushing to split the cases untill i actually needed to.

Like i said i'm with OG check out the clutch.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll try these suggestions and get back to everyone with what I find out. And thanks for the other referring site as well.

    Cheers

  2. I have a 1972 DT2 250 Enduro. It has only 4900 miles on it but ever since I rode it first gear slips, not all the time but the majority of the time. I've spoken to a few mechanics and their input was that the bike was ridden by someone who learned to ride on the bike. I'm guessing this was my brother who learned to ride on this bike when he was in high school. I'm contemplating doing the work myself. The clutch has a very short range to it in terms of grab and release (springs worn out?) and I figure if I'm going to do that I might as well as replace 1st gear as well. I've done minor work on the bike, carb rebuild, cleaned up the piston, etc.

So here is the question… is this something I could/should attempt on my own? What is the difficulty factor, special tools etc.? Any tips, thoughts or special input?

    Thanks.

  3. Hey guys, I have just recieved a 1973 RT-1 360 that is in a rebuild stage. This bike was my fathers which he bought new in 73' and he passed away in 2005. So I am trying to restore this bike to working condition and it needs a ton of work. I am looking to replace a lot of the part with new ones, but I am having a hard time finding web sites that have what I need. For starters I need a new gas tank and a seat. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Kelley.

    Hi Kelley,

That is very cool! I am in the middle of the same type of project. I picked up my dad's '72 DT2 250 Enduro that he had bought brand new. He died in '78 and the bike has been sitting in storage since then. It has a mere 4K miles on it and I have been scrounging the web for parts as well. Here is what I have found... Always cross check prices on parts with other sites.

http://216.168.60.165/speedandsportinc/index.tpl - Speed and Sport: they are quick to respond. Compare prices, some items they have for cheap compared to other sites but some parts they have are more expensive than other sites.

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/M...ycle/parts.html - Good site, fast delivery good schematics and parts cross referencing

http://www.nwvintagecycleparts.com/ - great people!! but no pictures of parts is the only downer so sometimes it can be hard to cross reference.

Here is the BEST bit of information that I have found out. If you cannot find a part for your bike it is very possible that that part number was used on another model and another year but it is still the exact same part. For example, if you cross reference on part number 233-84115-60-00 you will see that it is a headlight rim used on many different models: see this link... http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamaha/Y...4154-60-00.html

If you dig further you will see that the first 3 digits change and the last 3 sets of numbers stay the same. This part was used on many different models. So when looking for parts don't look for parts according to your bike model, search for the last 3 sets of part numbers... "84115-60-00" not "233-84115-60-00". But before you buy the part be sure to then use http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/M...ycle/parts.html and cross reference the pictures of the parts.

Good luck and I would love to see some pics of your bike.

    Cheers!

    Travis

  4. Thanks for that but the tank seems to be the only thing not available on that site.

Check these guys out. http://www.nwvintagecycleparts.com/ They are located just outside of Portland I believe. They don't like visitors though. Call and ask for Mark. They may be able to track one down for you. Also there is Bent Bike in Seattle but beware the noise is that it's find it yourself type place with very little friendly service. http://www.yelp.com/biz/bent-bike-motorcyc...alvage-lynnwood

    Good luck!
