XS600 help
in Naked
Hi all,I am new to the site and need a bit of help. I have been offered a XS600 by my a relative. It has not been run for over four years and is belived to have a battery/alternator problem. She can give me no further info and as she lives a considerable distance away, I could do with finding out what the bike is. I.e. is it a sports, a cruiser, a vintage modle or what? Are spares available for this model? Sorry for being so vague. Where can I download a photo?
Thanks
ChrisK
yamaha only made xs240, xs360 xs400 xs500 xs650 (twins) xs750 xs850 (triples) and xs1100 (fours).
no such thing as an xs600 need to go back and find out which it actually is. may be get the engine number, number of cylinders would also help.

Hey thanks Drewpy... wonder if i will have the energy to take photos on the way?
no problem

dear all,
i have just purchased this bike -
the clutch is sticky - i think it could do with a service. i wanting to get my hands dirty - what should i do for a basic service?
change the oil, filter, plug etc?
where is the best place to get parts for my bike - i am based in north london.
worse case - who should i go to for servicing - i need someone who is cheap but good.
many thanks,
vishal vora
Get yourself a manual and read it.
Haynes should do one for your bike and it tells you what needs doing at what intervals and how its done. That's how I learned.

DOH ! Im just stupid ! Thanks for the reply's people ! I should have had the bike running !!
I guess the current forced through the bike is greater than from the battery alone.....the LED's are bright and flash correctly when the bike is running !!
Cant beleive i didnt check that before!
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Thanks everyone

Hi all,
hoping you can help me resolve a problem ! recently fitted some LED indicators to my 2003 R6 and all seemed fine! obviously they flashed like crazy as i hadnt changed the indicator relay but they did flash and they were mighty bright ! (as you would expect)
however, and this is where it gets strange! I fitted a new LED relay to slow down the flash rate and it worked !..........the flash rate has dropped down to legal levels but you can hardly see them flash ?? its just a dim glow (had to turn the garage lights off to see them)
Have i got a duff relay? or is it something else? I'm stumped!
any help would be appreciated!
cheers all.
are there resistors on your LEDs? maybe the relay has them also so that the extra resistance will lower voltage enough to cause the symtoms you describe.
I am not an electronics expert so don't take my suggestion as gospel!!

hi im in need of some help , i have just bought a yamy ty175 but it didnt come with any paperwork so im unsure of wether its registered or not, is it possible to find out the year of manufacture from the frame number if so how, thanks
you need the registration number. If you haven't got one then you will have to reregister anyway.
you need to contact the vjmc and they will help in obtaining an age related plate.

Drewpy - How did the Solvol work for you?
And did you find the exhaust you were looking for?
Hope all is well
G
I've since been told autosol was too abrasive so didn't try. I have managed to get 1 nos downpipe and 1 being rechromed as we speak. The nos ones have twin walls to stop blueing.
Still looking for a right hand silencer, tried classic bike forum as well. only could offer 3n6 silencer which i already have
1U4 anyone?

Hi all, just me again hassling you all, gonna post some pics of my wreck soon but need some more advice, my TR1 has a control unit for the wiring, can i junk this? i have a wiring diagram from the internet for a 1986 virago that a guy posted and looks good, but first i just want to turn the engine over, how can i do this? the engine is complete but on the bench as the bike was a wreck when i bought it i couldn't turn it over, can i do this with a fresh battery and a few wires?
\i know i must sound like a nob but this is my first project and its from the ground up so i need all the help i can get!!!
Thanks guys.
never throw anything away, 6 months later and you will want it. I can tell you from experience on that one
to turn the engine over, just use the fat black lead from the starter motor (or whatever that colour is) and ground another heavy duty lead from the negative on the battery. Take out the spark plugs first as it will be easier to do this with less compression. Also squirt a little oil down the bores to help lube the engine.
I assume that you still have engine oil in the engine and that you are checking it over to make sure its not seized? dont leave the starter on for more than a few secs as it will burn out!
I would put the engine on the floor, that way if it jumps, it won't fall off and crush you toes, or what ever is sticking out at the time!!!

The XS400D I picked up last weekend is missing the airfilter boxes and the boots to link them to the carbs.
I have Mikuni BS34's on there and wanted to know if I can just add the "POD" filters that I see for sale everywhere - and if so, do I still need to find a set of boots to link them to the carbs and can I still get the side panels on.
Also - Are the Mikuni BS34's - the same BS34's that I see used on much newer bikes?
I find it odd that they are on the 77 xs400 - and same BS34's seem to be on the 80-84 XS650's.
Can I swap them out for a set of BS38's which were used on the 76 - 79 XS650's?
I am sooo stoked to get this bike up and back on the road again. What I promised my wife would be a little bike to take apart and learn the inner workings of motorcycles is going to be a restoration - I can just feel it!
Thanks for all the help
G
There are plenty of spares around, and I would keep it stock as the carburation would be out and especially if you are restoring the bike. The pods do fit straight on the bike carbs, then you would need to change the jetting to compensate for the increased air flow.
Fitting bs38's would lose tractability of the bike as you are losing the high airflow on the intake because your using larger carbs. Great if you are racing and keeping the bike in the 9k+ rev mark!
BTW for spare carbs, the xs750/850's use the same carb but with differrent jets

can any one tell me will my xt 250 run without a battery?
have you checked out the batteryeliminator site
http://bat-pac.com/compatibility/index.htm
says you can with a large capacitor (that's what a bat-pac is) and if you google there's bound to be someone who has found a compatible one from Maplins cheaper!!

Hi all,
I have a TR1 in bits at the moment, looking to fit a wider rear wheel, but obviously this would mean the gearbox sprocket and rear wheel sprocket will not line up, any ideas or help on overcoming this????
thanks in advance guys
space out the front sprocket?.
You can get laser alignment tool from MandP to check!

A couple made a deal that whoever died first would come back and inform the other of the afterlife. Their biggest fear was that there was no afterlife.
After a long life, the husband was the first to go, and true to his word he made contact, 'Annie, Annie.'
'Is that you, Fred?'
'Yes, I've come back like we agreed.'
'What's it like?'
'Well, I get up in the morning, I have sex, I have breakfast, off to the golf course, I have sex, I bathe in the sun, and then I have sex twice.
I have lunch, another romp around the golf course, then sex pretty much all afternoon.
After supper, golf course again. Then have sex until late at night. The next day it starts again.'
'Oh, Fred you surely must be in heaven?'
'Not exactly, I'm a rabbit in Suffolk.'

Looks like a 400D as you say i think the 250.s had drum rear brakes
Merv
360's had drum brakes front and rear and I think 250's only sold in europe where they both had drum or disk options. the "cruisers" had rear drums along with 16" alloys at the rear.
the reason I suggested to look at the casting, is that it is a straight forward swop to change the SOHC engines around.

My K Reg. Pre-Divvy XJ900F has fallen prey to the dreaded Petrol Tank Tinworm. Bugger! I have tried all of the Snakeoil "Sloshit about-lard it on" remedies, and have had to admit defeat. Scraped it all off and am horrified at the state of it.
Asked a quote from Tank Re-Nu in Hartlepool ( Allegedly foolproof solution) £150 plus VAT. Than I'd have to get it painted! Does anybody have a better cure. Good, sound second hand ones are like odourless skunks- rare indeed. I am in Aberdeen. HELP !!! Blue2
is this it?

Thanks Drewpy!
Was hoping I might hear from you.
Great rennovation by the way!!!!!
Forgive my lack of knowledge, but where are the lower front barrels specifically?
Not sure if you are planning on watch the Super Bowl, but in case you are, have a great time!
GO COLTS!!!!!
Thanks
G
thanks for the compliment!
the lower front barrels are the bit where the last of the cooling fins are at the front, about 100mm above the oil filter housing.

Recently bought a project bike without papers on Ebay and got it home last night.
It's mainly a bike to tinker on and learn more in-depth repairs so I don't jepordize my daily ride ( 77 XS650D ).
Anyway, the owner had no real details other that in being a 77 400. There are no side panels and the ID #'s state it was manufactured in 1/77 and other than that it gives no size or model #.
I believe it's an XS400D - but figured you guys can help me verify.
The VIN # starts with 2A2 - which I've seen ID'd on some European pages as a 78 - but might be different seeing as this is an American bike.
Click the link ( I hope ) to see a pic - just looking to verify the year, model and size.

Thanks for this forum and I look forward to hearing from you all.
G
Yep an early 77' bike as the wheels are not painted. They are 400D in USA and 400C in europe. the CC's should be cast into the lower front barrels 398cc (xs400), 249cc(xs250) or 358cc(xs360)

Okay the new brake light has one bulb that is the taillight and the brake light ..
From the bike i have a black wire , yellow , and blue .
On my new aftermarket taillight breaklight i only have a red and black wire .
So do i wire the yellow and blue to the red ?
Then wire the black to the black ?
thanks
can't see that working!!!
you need black as earth and the two more wires as each goes to the two filaments in the bulb. One for normal lamp the other brighter for brake lamp.
you need an earth as the brackets are usually rubber mounted.
open up the lense and check you have the correct bulb in. easy to check as you take out the bulb and it should have two brass contacts for each filament side.
If it hasn't you can't use it for braking/tail lamp

Has anybody got any ideas as to why my 1996 20,000 miles trx850 is hard to start when its cold?
I have checked the choke, seems to working ok,
new plugs, when it won,t start i have taken the plugs out they seem ok, not wet with petrol.
fuel tap is working, filter in tank is not clogged, vacuum tap is working.
starts first time when hot.
good spark at the plug.
any ideas??
thanks kevrim
check battery terminals as cold cranking zaps juice for the ignition.
warm engine has charged battery and hot oil so less resistance. try heating spark plugs to see if that makes a difference as petrol (gas) ignites easier when warmed.

sounds like timing to me, I put my thumb over spark hole to get feel for the compression then I know the timing marks will be tdc.
