  1. Well hello again, I am still working on this dang thing. Well I checked the valves cold, and all four needed a little fine tuning. Then to the float height, they were really close but a little off, so I corrected them also. Went riding tonight and rode it pretty hard for about 25 minutes and it wasn't running to bad, still a little boggy mid throttle. Then i parked it at a store, and when I came out I had to kick about 15 times to get it to fire, and then once it did it was back to its old tricks-full throttle on the hand grip but was barely idling. I also noticed that the engine felt extremely hot. After about ten seconds of that it finally came out of it, and I could rev it up some, then off I went back home. While going home it was really boggy midrange again, and didn't really want to idle at stops or else it was revving really high. I pulled it into the garage and it wouldn't stay idling for me again. So I am pretty sure that it has something to do with ignition when it gets hot. Until the bike get really warmed up it runs great.

need to check your ignition coils next:

off the top of my head: 4ohms and 9k ohms (+/-20% @ 20'C) for secondary and primary, these should be the readings you are looking for. The coils could also break down with running, Mine did that.

Also check your battery is charged and charging at 14.5 volts.

did you check that the tips of the pilot needles hav'nt broken off in the carb body? If you take one out, they should have a really sharp needle. Both mine had broken off in the carb body and the spare set were the same.

  2. Who the h*ll gives a crap about some kids in Tanzania? We should worry about our own first don't you think?

Why send your money over there to those cash seeking pity cases.

Just had some kids over from Tanzania to our scout night. The local school raised money to bring them over, as the teachers who went over on hols last year were so moved.

These kids have nothing, I was so moved by their selflessness and eagerness to please. They came over in a T-shirt and a pair of trousers as that's all they owned. people donated shoes and socks for them and we all moan about not having this and that. It certainly makes you think.

even the poorest people here have a lot more than these kids do.

we are on this world to make things better for everyone, the selffish can go to Hell!!

  3. Just thought I'd post it in the classics because it's old! Was given this for free by friends as a non-runner. Decoked the head, changed the chain and fluids, added some not so necessary bits to tidy it up and it passed it's MOT first time! First bike project with my dad and it's been great fun, I feel I've learned a lot (except that you need to check the fuel regularly on it!)

    Whaddya think guys?

Nice bike, what's your next project?

  4. hey drewpy,

so how much hp would these cams make ??

and do you anyone that has them ??

also, how much do they cost ??

    nice bike btw

no idea mate, need to contact megacams and then let us all know.

I didn't get one as its a bit far to send and havn't got the dosh yet ;)

  5. Good advice on the manuals,, I'm on it !! . I have a Yamaha XS360 with 2D supplement shop manual on the way. I just received the Clymer 1976-78 manual. A Haynes manual on CD. Also have a Parts manual on the way. If I don't learn something from all this, I'll go sit in the corner !!.

Thanks again drewpy, your a good man to have around. I don't know about that handle you use, don't sound drewpy to me. :P

you should speak to the wife ;)

  6. Hi all

I am new to this forum, I have a 1972 cs5e in a purple/ cream colour combination which I am restoring to concourse condition. Can anyone tell me as to where I can find the paint codes for this or the actual colour name would suffice

    Thanks in anticipation

could try here; http://www.motorradlack.de/ I suggest using an on-line translator if you don't spraken ze deutch

  7. The power seems to be OK, good pick up thru the gears. No smoke. I think your right about doing it myself. I've worked on my own cars so I may as well get educated on the bike. At least a person knows what has been done or attempted untill it is right.

Thanks for the reply drewpy !!!!

no problem, do a forum search for online manuals as I must have listed them a few times

  8. 1977 Yamaha XS360D2. I've had the carbs cleaned and adjusted, new plugs and points, valves adjusted and timing set.

On the first start of the day it takes a minimum of a dozen kicks to fire it up. I've tried Choke , No choke, even Prime.

Doesn't seem to make any difference. After the first start , it starts and runs fine the rest of the day ???.Now I wonder if the local bike service guy knows what he is doing or actually did the work I paid for. I may have have to go talk to him with a tire iron..!.. Any suggestions sure will help..

should just fire right up on first kick! mine does (on half choke in UK summer)

why don't you get a manual and have a go tuning it yourself as its pretty easy and you'll get a lot more enjoyment from your bike!

If any timing etc is wrong It'll be a bugger to start, whats the power like and how smooth is the engine?

    get a compression check .

  9. Hi guy's and Gals, :D

I have a great looking XT500, which from what I can make out has a 1980 engine, tank and seat, but has a frame circa 1976. When I bought the bike it had a Q plate, and I was told that this was because the frame number was unreadable and therefore the DVLA could not varify the date of manufacture. Is there any way of getting it off the Q plate, as I would like to get an age related plate. I would appreciate any information on how to go about this.

    Thanks

the VJMC helps with that sort of thing. Its best to conact them!

  10. My wife's '81 XS400 has a float in the carb that is "stuck like chuck." While I can imagine the general process of breaking it down and cleaning, I do not know enough to really do it all the way, and do it properly. I will probably take it in and eat the cost of not doing it myself. My post is more actually about getting a copy of an owners manual, hopefully I can learn how to keep the fuel from the carbs and avoid this problem in the future. I was thinking... Maybe someone who has a copy of the owners manual for this bike could copy it and create a pdf or something. I can do the same and we could trade... I have an '84 Honda V30 Magna. I would also be willing to pay thru paypal for a copy. $5-10 seems fair. I just can't see buying the one copy on Ebay for $50! F*ck that!! Anyways, let me know.

  11. I have collected all of the necessary gaskets, seals, etc needed to do the following

restore and line the gas tank

refurbish the front forks (they are leaking oil, and are quite spongy)

so, before i tear into either of these, i have a few questions.......

    1) do i need to remove the head assembly from the bike to do this properly? my haynes and yamaha books both say i dont, but then dont explain how to do it without removing the whole head assembly. it seems like i should just be able to loosen the pinch bolts and pull them out of there.....

    2) while i am replacing the front fork seals, are there any other problem areas that i should be looking for? anything that the manuals dont tell me that might create a hang-up for me?

    3) does anyone know of a DIY way to knock some front fork dents out of a gas tank? i was thinking i might be able to do it with a rounded dowel and a mallet. it doesnt have to be perfect, i just think it doesnt have to be as bad as it is.

    thanks!

    1) If you have screw caps or a circlips for the top of the stantions to hold in the springs, take these off first as its easier to do when on the bike.

take off front wheel, loosen the pinch bolts and the stantions should just twist down. I would suggest raising the bike further off the ground to prevent them bottoming out on the ground.

    2) to take off the stantions from the sliders, there usually is a capscrew socket underneatth. If you don't "snap" it on first attempt, the insides just start turning and you need to make up a lonnnnggg tool out of tubing. I also put the spring back in and with my back to the wall, pushed the spring in via slider, and turned the capscrew off that way.

clean everything out and heat up the old seal and prise out with a tyre lever (taking off clip first). to knock back in, use a plastic water pipe of the right diameter for the seal (ie outer, not soft inner)

    3) No idea!!!

  12. I just bought a DT175 in Botswana. The bike comes from Yamaha South Africa. The headlamp dims so much when I apply the brakes, regaurdless of speed/rpm, that I can hardly see where I'm going. If I use my indicators, it does the same thing and when I use both, the light almost goes out. I managed to measure, with no other lights on, a 50 mV voltage loss on the negative side of the bulb and 450mV on the positive, making me suspect that the earth is good and they should have simply used heavier guage wiring from the factory.

I would like to change the 165mm x 100mm headlamp with a standard, e-code headlamp housing anyway, which would require a different bulb base like the p43t of an H4. This means that unless I can find an H4 in 6V, if they even exist, I might have to attempt a 12v conversion. I'd get less voltage drop, but unless there is a more robust stator that will fit this bike I might not get much of a charge on the battery below about 3000rpm. Otherwise, if I can find a 6V H4, I will just work out heavier guage wiring where it's needed and use 6V H4 globes. That would raise another question: anyone know how much current this magneto is able to produce?

Thanks for any insight on these matters! Keep well!

    Hi,

Have a look here as I'm sure there will be something for you!1

  13. Hey drewpy... Greetings from Puerto Rico, I just want to know if you know of any other performance sites for the xs400 , I also have a 1980 xs400sg and i'm looking for performance upgrades (bolt on's if so) Thank's Melvin.

    there's not a lot really,

Motad exhausts, and the cams mentioned previously. you can go twin disk up front using SR 500 left fork and caliper with an xs1100 master cylinder.

the yam xs's were pretty much perfect as they came. there was even a Yamaha sponsered race in Germany called the Yamaha Cup and these used XS400's for a time. These came with full fairing and plastic combined tank/seat unit. everthing else was standard.

  14. I have an 81 XS400. I played with the carb over the weekend (adjusted the idle seed, cleaned and rough sync) now after the engine is hot it stays at high idle after I decelerate. It did not do this before I worked on it but overall it runs much better now. Please help

    pilot system too lean.

do a search on forum, talked about plenty of times

  15. When you say relay do mean the ignition itself or the connectors?

Drewpy you just added a wire from the ignition to your head light switch? Did you have any issues with that?

not really, the wire from the switch was already there, being part of the left switch loom. I just had to buy some japanese type bullets and solder tup o the ignition switch by copying the old one I had.

  16. I just recently purchased a 1980 Yamaha XS 400 SG. I was just wondering what oil is best for this bike? The manual I have recommends 20w/50. I know there is special motorcycle engine oil anyone better than the other? Synthetic or conventional? I need new tires as these are pretty dry rotten. IRC RC RS310 90/90B-18 BLK FRONT, IRC RS310 120/90B-16 BLK REAR, Are these pretty good tires for just everyday riding? If anyone has any useful information about tuning this bike or anything I should check out I would greatly appreciate it. I'm new to motorcycle maintance so anything helpful would be great. Thank you in advance!

    [email protected]

I'm using 10w 40. I did use 20w50 and if you have really hot weather then i would go for that. I use semi-synthetic as full synth with make your clutch slip!!

the best tyres i have in use are Bridgestone BT45, the RD boys recommend these as well

As far as tuning goes Megacycle cams do a reprofiled cam for the xs

for specs etc try bike bandit as they will list your bike and also publish data.

  17. I just wanted to say Hi to everyone. I just recently got a 2008 R6S and decided to find a forum that would help and educate me. This is my first time owning a motorcycle of any kind. I have never rode before only to take my road test. Any ideas as to how I should ride and what mods I can do to it. Thanks to all. :D

    Wecome! :)

Keep your eye on the garage as mods go in there

  18. Well here is the latest and greatest. Tore the carbs all down, and let soak in carb cleaner-inspected pilot screws and both were bent a little bit at the tips. Found that the pilot screws were about 2 or so turns out, instead of 1.5. I did not check the float height yet though. So I reassembled the carbs and installed them. Also I figured I would make sure I even had the correct plugs in, the guy I got it from said they were. Well they weren't I had br9es in it, when it calls for bp6es so that's 3 stages hotter plug. Well I put the bike back together and so far it has been running pretty good, still a little bit of a bog coming from a stop through midrange which I think might be the pilot screws being bent. Also at idle it still back fires some out of the left pipe. I checked the plugs and the left plug is black, and the right plug looks great. I also did a compression tests with engine hot and got 125 on left, and 140 on right. The wet test was 140 on left, and a little over 150 on the right. So the compression isn't quite up to par (140-170 the manual says) but it is a 1977.

    here's the recap

    -pilot screws bent----causes bog?

    -float height no checked-- causes?

-compression left 125/140wet, right 140/150wet------not igniting everything causing plug to turn black?

-point gap not checked yet--Might cause the spark issue w/ the left plug?

Where can I get new pilot screws at? I have looked on the internet and haven't really found anything.

    #

check your valves as they could be leaking/mal adjusted

pilot screws as a keyster kit from sirrius online in canada or I got a set from motoward yamaha dealer (just google)

  19. sorry to kind of horn in on this one, but on that inline fuel filter, what kind of filter would you suggest? the hose from my petcocks to the carbs is very short (since there is one for each side, it doesnt have to go very far). how big are they, because size will be an issue since the hoses are so short.

    thanks.

I use the smallest i could find with a see thru bit so I know I can check for fuel (if the bike starts mis behaving) on the move.

  20. hi the plates are ok and there is a mushroom head at the end of the rod that pushes againts the metel plate were the springs bolt on to that puches againts the clutch plates

re-check your clutch actuating mechanism has been installed the right way round and is fed correctly with the screw part.

Also check the "fingers" of the clutch basket that they are not ridged as this will prevent the plates separating. you can dress them a bit but not too much or the plates will start chattering.
