  1. Likely to be reeds I'd have thought.
  2. Where the slide goes into the top of the carb right on the end of the throttle cable, it has a little brass needle that sticks down through the carb, it's a bit fiddly to get to but if you can unscrew the cap on the top of the carb where the throttle cable enters it you should see what I'm on about.
  3. Just a brain fart, but ive been drinking so it's to be expected. Try lifting your carb needle up a notch, should help the top end, if it feels worse you can always drop it down again
  4. Yep... Had it all packed up in a couple of big boxes ready to load, then it got found out, ah well. I've got a Haynes manual in my room somewhere, I'll dig it out tomorrow and see what it says
  5. Could be fuel level dropping in the bowl, check your tank and lines are flowing good and your float height is correct. A decent set of points should have your red one going, there's no CDI or electronic magic, just points, a primary winding and the ignition coil, if all of those are in good shape it should run. I had a yellow one when I was working in the US, got caught trying to smuggle it home on a C-17... It's still at NAS El Centro as far as I know.
  6. Yeah I can vouch for this, my chappy is good for 35/40 on the flat if I make myself small. JT sprockets used to provide a list on their website of sprockets, usually plus or minus 2 teeth each side. So, for more top speed you could go a tooth larger on the front and one smaller on the back, or keep the front the same and go two smaller on the back, chop and change until you find one you're happy with. Bear in mind though, even as an 80cc the chappy was never really designed to go fast at all, it's only a 2-speed auto. (4 speed manual rarely), how fast do you really want to go on a small tube frame with laughably small drum brakes and iddy biddy tyres?. As for the non starter, why not? Got spark? Fuel? Ignition?. Take the side cover off, clean and gap your points and spin it up on a drill, it might just need a bit of encouragement to get things moving if it's been stood a while.
  7. Holy crap, wow. This IS an old thread...
  8. http://s57.photobucket.com/user/wild_foamy/media/1010797_10152100614838961_669075362_n_zpsaac1a2c1.jpg.html?sort=3&o=52
  9. It can be done, I'll find a picture.. There should be a circlips under the seals, then the bronze bush on the stanchion is pressed in, use a hydraulic puller or improvise
  10. why would you want to?... its the same basket... you would gain nothing. same transmission also.
  11. Depending what parts you have, and what's deficient, it might be worth pick up a donor bike for a few £££, or buying an original loom from a breaker. Pictures would help, tbh.
  12. Yeah, what he said ^ There's a few pre-div XJs on here, someone should be able to advise.
  13. Welcome dude, nice collection of DTs there!
  14. Haven't been to the unit for a few weeks, I'll probably get around to having a play this weekend, even if I can't resolve the charging issue it's not like I'm running headlights etc so might be able to get away with plugging the optimate in every night.
  15. I'll take a padlock stand with me, don't want the tester to think I'm some knob. Currently in PayPal battles with the guy who sold me a Kawasaki front wheel and calipers claiming it was from an XS, turning out to be more of a pain in the ass now. In addition to that, need to find myself a wiring diagram to have a look at why it isn't charging.
  16. You know what I mean! Picking up an XS400 donor bike next week, will rob it of its calipers and stick it on evilbay unless someone else wants parts from it. On the plus side, brake light now works and it has a horn, so other than brakes and the charging issue it's kinda there. Is a stand needed for MOT? It currently hasnt got one, and mounting points have been cut off... Was just planning to lean it against stuff when I needed to park,
  17. 8 years now, time for a change. Oh, and the XS400 front end I bought turned out to be from a Z250... And one of the calipers was missing... Also discovered that it isn't charging the battery
  18. New brakes are on the way, brake light is on, almost ready to go!
  19. No Its with a company called CTP, but they aren't the ones holding everything back, DVLA are
  20. C+E driving, it's mainly the DVLA requiring extra medicals and things, I went a bit wobbly a couple years ago so there's been lots of enquiries into my fitness to drive. Nearest independent medical they could put me on is in 5 weeks, and it'll take a further two months for them to receive the result from the doc and decide Wether or not to give me provisonals, if I fail or don't attend I lose my car/bike licence aswell
  21. XS is staying, I've been delayed leaving the military until next year due to not being able to get the courses I want, which has kind of pissed me off. So I'm going to register it and dick around on it for a bit. Calipers have been sourced, rear light and horn are on, just waiting on a speedo from China and its all systems go.
  22. Oh the turbo has made a re-appearance, I'm actually quite surprised that young(er) me had the foresight to label ever part that came off, done a few little bits and pieces to it this weekend, assembling the swingarm/rear wheel, front forks etc, engine is being blanked up for sodablasting next week aswell. it's not going to be finished any time soon but any progress is good progress. There are a lot of bikes in there that will be getting moved on before I leave (DT125LC, Motobecanes, DR600, DR125). The Flat tracker might be staying, I'm unsure, it's nice just to look at, it has a story.
  23. It's a long way from being road legal though, if I went through all that work to get it up to scratch I'll no doubt end up keeping it!
  24. The boat is sold and hopefully being collected today, I've rented out a large unit to store my toys in as I will likely be working abroad for a couple of years when I leave the RAF later this year. I've got a DR600 and some other stuff in there I need to get rid of aswell, there's a lot of stuff that's been sold already (had the tail fin from a MIG-21 hung up above the boat for a few weeks). It's got to the point where I've started stacking things on top of other things, the chappy and Motron (Italian monkey bike) are on the roof rack on top of the Pajero, the Aprilia is hung up above the door with the Honda NX125 joining it shortly, the XJ Turbo and DT50 will be going in this week aswell
  25. Hey there peeps. Been a while since I updated the toybox, managed to pick up a rather unusual piece... It came from Holland, and was used at Venray motor Speedway Stadium before it closed down some 7 years ago. It runs, there are no brakes (you die like a man) and it's just a little bit nutty, kind of like me. It's nice to have something unusual, and even nicer to have something with a story (including the dented tank that resulted in a broken collarbone!) , I'm undecided Wether to move it on or just hang it up in the unit beside my Aprilia
