  1. Here's my XJ6 s 2012 I bought recently. Only 1,750 miles on the clock! It's a great ride, excellent condition really comfortable and pretty quick. I think I'll be keeping this one for a while...

  7. I finally found a downloadable service manual that covers the 1995 with the KYB USD fork and figured out how to free the spring from the damper rod. Of course it requires a special tool that can easily be improvised with some plastic pipe and a washer but since the seals can easily be replaced without disturbing the spring, I decided to simply wash everything with Maxxis Suspension cleaner and call it good. Rather than using air space to measure oil, I used volume. I put in slightly more than 16 US ounces in an effort to stiffen the compression a bit. I also used 15W oil. I won't bore you with all the work, time and money I put into this project but it was a fight at every turn. Now the bike that had been "stored" for 29 years with 162 miles on the odometer, now has 168 miles on it. Tomorrow, much more! https://www.facebook.com/bicycle.repairman.75/

  8. Hey again, just following up as mentioned, bike is now back together and the first run has been had with no issues , ended up having to go with a straight through muffler so it could breathe (and sounds great). Looking forward to many more miles, I must say the power increase is amazing and would highly recommend doing if you have the bike and the time. Some pics....cheers Baz.

  9. Snakebite - yes, have it already insured. Only found this forum once it was already done. Looking forward to ride and enjoy it as much as I can. One thing that really stuck to me was when my instructor said - always ride to your own expertise. Never been on bike before CBT, didn't get CBT done first try either, first experience was pretty groundbreaking for me as I managed to ride ok for most part and then at some point I had brain fart, panicked and ditched it dropping it on me just to finish my gracious manoeuvre off. Hard lesson was learned on first attempt on a bike, second time went a lot better, but boy oh boy I have lots to learn. I hope I will have lots of experiences, lessons and emotions to share with you guys and generations to come.

  13. It has been a while since I popped in here and in the search for more power and some research I have fitted the tope end from a TZR250 2XT model. The 2XT has plated bores instead of steel liners so are lighter and they have auxiliary exhaust ports and wider power valves fr more power so over the last week I have been busy prepping the 2XT top end ready to fit on my engine, which I completed yesterday. I have been out on it today in the one dry spell we had and gave it a good runabout an checking the plugs which looked happy and the bike felt happy too, went into the fun zone a few times and what a difference the 2xt top end has made. It has gone from a mad hooligan bike into a bonkers hooligan in the fun zone. It will be off to the dyno very soon for final set up and the all important back wheel power output readings.

  14. I am renovating a '77 DT250MX which was one of just 450 specials supplied to the Danish army. It has uprated front forks and an extended fuel tank as you can see from the picture. I have been able to source most parts that I need but two items are yet to be found, namely a complete exhaust system and the side cover for the airbox which when it is available is at an astronomical price due probably to their scarcity. So I have decided to try and make one. I have the air filter end cover which is held onto the airbox with 3 screws but what I need is a clear picture showing how the outer cover is attached to this inner cover. It looks as if it was with some sort of rubber hinge but I would like to have details of this. So if anyone can take pictures and either post or send to me direct it would be greatly appreciated. Here is a picture of my bike as is and another of how I hope it will look when finished

  15. Thank you very much jcr, that's a really good article. Unfortunately, I'd already taken most of the steps explained there. I ended up with a pulley wheel that was so corroded it broke up, lots of snapped bolts and an exup valve that was seized so tight in the housing that I think someone must've welded it there for a laugh. I managed to break the exup blade trying to get the damn thing out. To replace all the parts was in excess of £700, versus 294 for a Black Widow system. I'd recommend the Black Widow solution very highly. Beautifully made, perfect fit, brilliant delivery and the bike sounds awesome now. Absolute bargain and no more exup misery.

  18. Snakebite68 and neversaydie, thanks again for your help and suggestions. I have an update if you're interested! Ref the stubborn castle nut, I finally managed to get it free using a vice and adjustable spanner (covered the nut with a rag first to minimise damage to the nut). I decided not to get the header and silencer re-chromed for now and used Simoniz VHT silver to re-spray the corroded sections. It is matt finish but you can't really see it because it's on the inside. When I removed the Kenzo exhaust the bike came with, there was no gasket so I fitted a new one and mounted the renovated exhaust. The difference to the bike's power is really noticeable, it pulls really well up to an indicated 65mph and when I get down towards the tank it reaches just over 70. Had some great fun ragging it around this weekend and the more I've thrashed it the freer the engine has become - I think it was crying out for a good blast. It's just a great fun bike to ride and so light compared with my other big bikes. Feels like being 17 and 1989 all over again -only this time I don't have learner plates flying around. I've attached a pic of the bike with the exhaust fitted. Cheers, James

  19. Idle jet blocked, cleaning the outside of the carb doesent clean it in a running sense. Needs half hour in an ultrasonic bath.

  21. Throwing a slight curve on this, double check the wiring, i know, i know but bear with me, the early monoshock bikes use a 7 wire cdi which uses 2 source coils. One for low speed, one for high. The later bikes had a cleverer cdi and use 1 coil. Its not uncommon for people to switch the ig parts about thinking everything swaps but it doesent work, well it does badly and if the red is broken or not connected but generally it wont rev out. Something for you to look at, have had a dt175 since i was 16, yep bought for 2 quid in the pub (yes at 16!), still in my garage under a blanket and im past 50 something the dt can barely do lol into the wind. When you do get it running properly you want to richen things up a touch, e5 and more so e10 run hotter than normal unleaded, (yamaha's are already happy with unleaded as japan never had leaded fuel). So you need to richen the mixture to prevent burning a hole in the piston when riding fast, (go on ask... still have the piston somewhere). Hope it helps.

  23. Two wives decided on a girlie night out. On the way home they needed a pee and nipped into a graveyard. Then they realised that they didn't have any wipes to finish up, so the first one used her knickers, and the second one found a wreath and used that. The next day one husband rang the other and said 'No more girlie nights out, mine came home with no knickers on'. The other said, 'Well if you think that's bad mine came home with a card in her crack that said 'From all of us at the fire station - we'll never forget you.''

  26. Hard jet washing is bad. Too many exposed or semi exposed bearings / joints to blast the grease out of! You can jet wash from a distance to get more of a 'soak' going, but be careful. There's all sorts of cleaning products out there, everyone will have a different opinion on them, you probably have to make your own choices... The big problem with cleaning bikes is all the interesting gaps & cubby holes that all the crap gets into. Young and bendy is the key to cleaning a bike well. When you get old and creaky like me, it gets a LOT harder lol.

  27. 1/ Not a clue, they don't appear to make one... 2/ As far as I can tell, if it's oily, it's ok, if it's not, it's bad... 3/ Yes, the pump WILL stop if you have the nozzle fully in the tank, however, since you're filling to almost the top of the tank you won't actually have the nozzle in the tank... So, no... 4/ Pro: Sounds good. Con: Could get you arrested...

  29. For anyone interested in rider to pillion communication I have got this,,,,,, "Interphone Connect Bluetooth Intercom" It is a brilliant bit of kit. Really clear sound. Also connects to phone, sat nav, other bikes if you want, waterproof and has built in radio. ect . Easy to fit into each helmet and so far perfect sound even at 70mph. I only wanted it so I could talk to my daughter on the back and make sure she was ok, and to be honest that's probably all I use it for (I'm not a teck lad),, but it will do lots more if you wanted it too. Little on the expensive side but worth it. Can get them on eBay, Amazon, Sports bike shop,,,,,,the usual places. Anyway if you're in the market for something like this,,,,, check them out Pat

  30. Hi. Thanks a lot for your response. Just fixed it, after a week of head scratching and checking everything I found that the previous owner had reversed the cam on the advance unit…..no wonder it was a non-runner. I didn’t even know it came apart!

  34. Ok, thanks. The rings are new. I don't know anything about reeds yet. I didn't replace the seals when I rebuilt it. The gaskets are cheap replacements. Ive never had a motorbike in the UK and I don't even have CBT. It was a project just to mess with, although I'm growing to love this little machine. Ok, I'll get the seal kit and all that and rebuild it.

  36. Hi Neo, thanks very much for your research, it's much appreciated. I scraped the soot from the neck of one of the exhausts but it hardly made any difference to the diameter measurements, and I couldn't really feel much of a step inside the neck either so I'm not sure that a ring type gasket fits inside. I've used exhaust paste in the past to seal exhaust joints, but as you say it can be a real pain to seperate them again. A friend has suggested smearing Blue Hylomar on the downpipes before pushing the downpipes into the silencers. it doesn't harden and it copes with high temperatures. If it doesn't do the job at least it won't be a problem seperating the pipes again to clean it off. I hadn't thought about looking for a microfiche for the RS200 as I don't have access to a reader, but after you mentioned being able to read them using a loupe and a strong light I thought I'd have a look. I've now found and bought a microfiche for the RS200 from Germany. it's for a 1980 model, but has the 3L2 suffix so hopefully there won't have been too many model changes during the production run, besides it was only 11 quid so it hasn't broken the bank. As you've mentioned, once I have a part number I can start doing comparisons with other models. Thanks a million for all your help. You've pointed me in other directions that I hadn't thought about, hopefully one of them will lead me to a successful conclusion! All the best, Stuart

  38. I didn't use the paste on the gaskets, no need, they were proper crushable jobs. I used the paste on the sections that joined together, but, honestly, they were that good a fit and a generous overlap that I could likely have done without it Hoping to refit the belly pan and possibly fairing tomorrow- I'll be sure to post a full review of the proceedings on here. That may get to Wednesday tho, hoping to have a look at a Tuono Factory tomorrow evening. I sold my 1200 Tiger Explorer last year, with every intention of stopping riding after my missus was diagnosed with breast cancer. But she's recovered well from surgery and chemotherapy and I'm finding the bike bug, after 50 years, is still strong. Won't be going touring anymore, which is what I bought the Tiger for, but I'm struggling to do without one.

  39. Thank you Neo it looks like that’s from an earlier model as that adjustment is hidden behind a frame but the set up is similar so I’ll give it a go at the weekend. I assume it’s not rocket science so well within my capabilities great stuff Neo and thanks again

  44. I thought so. Trustpilot gives them a great score. motorcycleproducts.co.uk Yes, of course. But I didn't know about CDIs and TCIs - I was just buying coils. I had no idea there were two distinctly different types. I hope so. Is there a 'better' place on this website where it would be more prominent?

  46. its a bad idea m8 ! save ur money and buy a 250cc engine to put in the beast! the crank is a week point in the engine even as a 125! so boring it up to any amount is goin to put more strain on it. the problem is the bottom end of the crank where the conrods connect...its just metal on metal so is slowly grinding down which eventually causes too big a gap between the conrod and crank, this lets the conrod move side to side and knackers up the engine! with it being a 125 its not bad and will last you a fair few years (as long as the oil is good) but with the added "boom" of a re-bore it will wear down a HELL of allot faster! but by all means do it if you want but il be taking bets on how long it will last! and my bet will be 2 weeks ....if your lucky! iv put a honda cbr 125 (2004) in mine, cost about £900 all in all but iv done all the work myself including making custom mounts, air filter, and wiring. its a big job and not one to be taken lightly but i can add a 150cc bore kit to it for about £200 which wont damage the engine. (cause the engine is originally designed to be a 150cc but for the uk market they put a 125cc barrel, piston, and head on it) at the end of the day it will be cheaper (and more practical) to put a new bigger engine in there...rather than spend money on a mod that will not last 2 weeks. try this link My link they have decent engines for sale and the parts are cheep enough that you dont mind if something goes pop. it was my 1st choice for an engine but since i only have a provisional license i wouldnt get value for money (in terms of bhp) im sure if you give them a ring you might be able to get them to fit it all for you! (for a cost of course) but its probably ur best bet.
