  1. Here's my XJ6 s 2012 I bought recently. Only 1,750 miles on the clock! It's a great ride, excellent condition really comfortable and pretty quick. I think I'll be keeping this one for a while...

  10. I finally found a downloadable service manual that covers the 1995 with the KYB USD fork and figured out how to free the spring from the damper rod. Of course it requires a special tool that can easily be improvised with some plastic pipe and a washer but since the seals can easily be replaced without disturbing the spring, I decided to simply wash everything with Maxxis Suspension cleaner and call it good. Rather than using air space to measure oil, I used volume. I put in slightly more than 16 US ounces in an effort to stiffen the compression a bit. I also used 15W oil. I won't bore you with all the work, time and money I put into this project but it was a fight at every turn. Now the bike that had been "stored" for 29 years with 162 miles on the odometer, now has 168 miles on it. Tomorrow, much more! https://www.facebook.com/bicycle.repairman.75/

  11. Hey again, just following up as mentioned, bike is now back together and the first run has been had with no issues , ended up having to go with a straight through muffler so it could breathe (and sounds great). Looking forward to many more miles, I must say the power increase is amazing and would highly recommend doing if you have the bike and the time. Some pics....cheers Baz.

  12. Snakebite - yes, have it already insured. Only found this forum once it was already done. Looking forward to ride and enjoy it as much as I can. One thing that really stuck to me was when my instructor said - always ride to your own expertise. Never been on bike before CBT, didn't get CBT done first try either, first experience was pretty groundbreaking for me as I managed to ride ok for most part and then at some point I had brain fart, panicked and ditched it dropping it on me just to finish my gracious manoeuvre off. Hard lesson was learned on first attempt on a bike, second time went a lot better, but boy oh boy I have lots to learn. I hope I will have lots of experiences, lessons and emotions to share with you guys and generations to come.

  16. It has been a while since I popped in here and in the search for more power and some research I have fitted the tope end from a TZR250 2XT model. The 2XT has plated bores instead of steel liners so are lighter and they have auxiliary exhaust ports and wider power valves fr more power so over the last week I have been busy prepping the 2XT top end ready to fit on my engine, which I completed yesterday. I have been out on it today in the one dry spell we had and gave it a good runabout an checking the plugs which looked happy and the bike felt happy too, went into the fun zone a few times and what a difference the 2xt top end has made. It has gone from a mad hooligan bike into a bonkers hooligan in the fun zone. It will be off to the dyno very soon for final set up and the all important back wheel power output readings.

  18. I am renovating a '77 DT250MX which was one of just 450 specials supplied to the Danish army. It has uprated front forks and an extended fuel tank as you can see from the picture. I have been able to source most parts that I need but two items are yet to be found, namely a complete exhaust system and the side cover for the airbox which when it is available is at an astronomical price due probably to their scarcity. So I have decided to try and make one. I have the air filter end cover which is held onto the airbox with 3 screws but what I need is a clear picture showing how the outer cover is attached to this inner cover. It looks as if it was with some sort of rubber hinge but I would like to have details of this. So if anyone can take pictures and either post or send to me direct it would be greatly appreciated. Here is a picture of my bike as is and another of how I hope it will look when finished

  19. Thank you very much jcr, that's a really good article. Unfortunately, I'd already taken most of the steps explained there. I ended up with a pulley wheel that was so corroded it broke up, lots of snapped bolts and an exup valve that was seized so tight in the housing that I think someone must've welded it there for a laugh. I managed to break the exup blade trying to get the damn thing out. To replace all the parts was in excess of £700, versus 294 for a Black Widow system. I'd recommend the Black Widow solution very highly. Beautifully made, perfect fit, brilliant delivery and the bike sounds awesome now. Absolute bargain and no more exup misery.

  22. Snakebite68 and neversaydie, thanks again for your help and suggestions. I have an update if you're interested! Ref the stubborn castle nut, I finally managed to get it free using a vice and adjustable spanner (covered the nut with a rag first to minimise damage to the nut). I decided not to get the header and silencer re-chromed for now and used Simoniz VHT silver to re-spray the corroded sections. It is matt finish but you can't really see it because it's on the inside. When I removed the Kenzo exhaust the bike came with, there was no gasket so I fitted a new one and mounted the renovated exhaust. The difference to the bike's power is really noticeable, it pulls really well up to an indicated 65mph and when I get down towards the tank it reaches just over 70. Had some great fun ragging it around this weekend and the more I've thrashed it the freer the engine has become - I think it was crying out for a good blast. It's just a great fun bike to ride and so light compared with my other big bikes. Feels like being 17 and 1989 all over again -only this time I don't have learner plates flying around. I've attached a pic of the bike with the exhaust fitted. Cheers, James

  25. Throwing a slight curve on this, double check the wiring, i know, i know but bear with me, the early monoshock bikes use a 7 wire cdi which uses 2 source coils. One for low speed, one for high. The later bikes had a cleverer cdi and use 1 coil. Its not uncommon for people to switch the ig parts about thinking everything swaps but it doesent work, well it does badly and if the red is broken or not connected but generally it wont rev out. Something for you to look at, have had a dt175 since i was 16, yep bought for 2 quid in the pub (yes at 16!), still in my garage under a blanket and im past 50 something the dt can barely do lol into the wind. When you do get it running properly you want to richen things up a touch, e5 and more so e10 run hotter than normal unleaded, (yamaha's are already happy with unleaded as japan never had leaded fuel). So you need to richen the mixture to prevent burning a hole in the piston when riding fast, (go on ask... still have the piston somewhere). Hope it helps.

  27. I,m in! If you can let me know where and I can see if there is a nearby hotel/guest house, YES I,m old!! bike is ready and setup for 1st of April anyway (Taxed on the 1st of April) I need to get out after 2 years of covid. Brixam is a nice spot, can be a bit full on tho, does'nt one of our regulars live down in the west country? Sorry can't remember his handle but he works in one of the small town harbours and has an FJ1200. Ah just had a flash of inspiration "DUTCH" anyone heard from him lately?

  28. How's it going every one? I've not ridden bar a couple of hire mopeds on holiday since I brought my tiger to squires and we went on ride out to Scarborough. That's got to be atleast 5 years. Sold on and left without a bike was a big difference in life cause I used to ride me, far and wide in all weather's and all hours. Met some great people attended some great days out. How I never got any points or anything I'll never know cause I rode that TDR singing all the way. It's still around. I kept it for a long time but unfortunately I couldn't keep it anymore and it's not with a lad I know in boxes. I've managed to track down my Tiger last month and delt for it back unfortunately it's in a bad way having done one European then parked in a leaking garage with a full tank since 2017. Wouldn't be a problem but these steamer tigers have plastic tanks. It's well oxidized as well. It's all doable. I've been homeless for a while well living in a car for a year. Thing's have changed and I've now found affordable housing so that's good. I had me hgv licence revoked and my car for a bit but that's back now and I'm due my hgv back anytime soon. Tip here is never tell a doctor anything. That help you asking for could cost you everything. You can't drive a wagon if you low so they take it off you and you've just got to deal with it and some how stay afloat. Well I hope you all still around and doing well. I've just the two bikes now. Neither currently on the road. My old Triumph Tiger and a Triumph Sprint I bought on the way home from picking up the tiger. Not many people seem to want them, shame cause these 900 (885cc) triples are great bikes with a lovely bark Davy

  29. Ok as the bloody covid is at last coming to a conclusion we should start thinking about a meet, where and when? Can be nice and warm in April if you want to go early in the year or wait till June- July if that makes it easier for everyone! Down in the west country is usually warmer than anywhere in the UK, Devon or Cornwall would be great I suppose and the roads are tiny and Exmoor can be interesting or out to Lands end if you fancy a windy morning. Lots of camp sites and small pubs and even a hotel or two . Just sayin!

  32. Thanks for that Cynic, I had a good look round for the heated grip wiring today. Turns out the heated grip and seat connectors are there, they were well taped up so couldn't see them the first time. I have now fitted the grips and all working fine. Good call on the relay idea that's the route I would have taken if the dedicated wiring wasn't there. Cheers.

  36. Two wives decided on a girlie night out. On the way home they needed a pee and nipped into a graveyard. Then they realised that they didn't have any wipes to finish up, so the first one used her knickers, and the second one found a wreath and used that. The next day one husband rang the other and said 'No more girlie nights out, mine came home with no knickers on'. The other said, 'Well if you think that's bad mine came home with a card in her crack that said 'From all of us at the fire station - we'll never forget you.''

  39. Hi. Thanks a lot for your response. Just fixed it, after a week of head scratching and checking everything I found that the previous owner had reversed the cam on the advance unit…..no wonder it was a non-runner. I didn’t even know it came apart!

  41. Thanks for this Neo. Funnily enough I have read another article from Steve Cooper on the RS200, dated the 2nd of July 2022, but this one is slightly different from his last one. I'm not complaining, the more information I can get my hands on the better! All the best, Stuart

  42. It looks like there may be a couple of hole options on the frame for the rear shock rocker to connect to, I'd check that out first. The other obvious option would be a lower seat. However, personally, I'd see how she goes with it first, remember, you kinda grow into bikes. As she relaxes she'll be able to get her feet down further...

  45. Well, the lil cbr has the most pathetic wheel/tyre combo at 80/17 100/17 i mean come on there are pushbikes with wider, thats fact too not just internet bull. Anyway, looking at her boyfriends bike, then looking again with a tape measure, what do you know the spacings work to switch the wheels. So she may well get some yzf wheels in her cbr, get em powder coated repsol orange. Can feel the hate
