Hello everyone! I own a 1982 Yamaha DT 175...since yesterday, the kickstart does not turn the engine and can be moved with a finger. It used to do this during the first 2 kickstarts, but then you could feel the lever turning the engine and everything would be fine. I noticed that when I tilt the bike, or simply leave the stand down, the kickstart works fine. IT seeme like there is a mechanism that is not in place when the bike is vertical. As you can imagine this really is a pain and I look like an idiot trying to start the bike sideways!! I also have another question....the light coming out of the front headlamp is very dim, especially when I swicth on the 'brig…

Well, for starters i am, a first timer. apart from being on the back of a friend's bike and formerly owning a 50cc scooter, i am a total newbie. this is the bike i am considering. any idea as to the diagnosis? i am very comfortable with a wrench, etc. and also have a good friend/biker who would be willing to help me get started riding. http://albuquerque.craigslist.org/mcy/524295443.html i have also downloaded drewpy's service manual (thanks), which is how i found this forum, just searching for xs360. anyway all help would be appreciated. thanks

I'm currently rebuilding a 1980 DT175MX. Sadly its been sitting in a shed for 17 years so has accumulated a hell of a lotta rust in lots of places. I've almost stripped it down to the frame now and would be grateful for any advice on what anyone thinks the best methods for rust removal are. I've been told about all sorts from 'blasting' to 'dipping' and would love to know what people's experiences are. Cheers Josh

I have a 79' model DT175 which I'm getting ready for registration. The oil light (2 stroke tank under side cover)is on all the time. I have pulled out the switch and checked the operation of the contacts which seem OK. The switch has 3 wires going to it ( I could not work out why it needed 3 wires?) and on closer inspection I found that there is a diode inside a resin type of plug in the top of the switches rubber top. I checked the diode and it seems OK. ( I'm an Electrician) When I disconnect the diode the switch works OK. I would like to know what the diodes purpose in life is?? Why would you need a diode across what should be a simple switch?? Thanks Mark

Just picked up a 82 xs400 dohc and upon inspection noticed the rear shock seams to be worn. This is my first motorcycle so I'm not sure if the shock is rebuildable or if i can simply readjust it into spec. Also, I've searched for a new replacement piece but they're discontinued. I've seen some old ebay listings with used shocks, but would rather stay away from that if possible (dont know what i'm getting). Are there any recommendations as to aftermarket pieces or shocks from a different bike that'd work. Just want to see if there is someone out there who has figured it out already before I start busting into it. THANKS!

just got into bike modding this year, cosmetics are simple, and cheap, I buy these older bikes for a couple hundred, mechanically great with low miles, just an outdated look, drop em, solo seat, modify fenders, and change out handlebars to give these bikes a cooler styling. Just got an xs-1100 yesturday, but my buddy mentioned that I may have problems because it's a shaft drive, my others so far have been chain. I've looked on the net and see plenty of lowered shaft drive bikes, so is it not an issue??? or do I have to do something internal to compensate the change of degree of the shaft. I'll be dropping her about 5 inches right down on the tire and using fender struts.…

When I open the choke the bike just turns over and doesn't sound like it is sparking. I took the plugs out and they are sooty and have un-burnt fuel on them. If I close the choke it sounds like it wants to spark and it would if I just opened the choke. But, as I said, opening the choke kills it completely. Any ideas? Carbs?
