I got a pair of ignition coils off an 1981 XJ650 that I'd like to use on my 1980 XS 400 Special - the XJ coils have two wires coming out of them, one fires cylinders #1 and #4, whereas the other gets #2 and #3 - does anyone know what the firing order for the XJ is? Do the cylinders fire two at a time, (so #1 and #4 together, then #2 and #3 together), or there is an offset in the firing time? Thanks!

I just bought a 1978 Yamaha XS400. I'm completely new to motorcycles. It only has 4400 miles on it, but it's running a little rough. The guy I bought it off of said it was running a little rough when he brought it to me. (He actually rode it down to our meeting). It had been sitting awhile because he had bought a new bike. It sometimes dies while idling. I took it out the other day for my first ride beyond a mile. It seemed fine for a while. When I got on the highway, after about 1/2 mile at 60 mph it started to lose power. It seemed doggish. When I was able to pull off in a parking lot, as soon as I got off the throttle it died. It didn't want to start up aga…

Hi all, This is my first post to the owners club. I just bought an XS650 US Custom (1981) from the NABD bikers charity on Ebay. It looked very standard in the photos though the detail was a bit scant...... well it turned up today and my initial delight quickly turned into a bit of a head scratching session. The bike has had its rear brake modded so that it is activated from the left hand handlebar via a modern Triumph clutch master cylinder and braided hose that is plumbed in all the way to the rear caliper. Yes the bike now has a second lever above the cable clutch lever. Why? Well the gear shift lever now exits the crank case on the right side, a la Brit bike s…

I have a 81 XS 400 with bad rings. I tore down the top half of the engine to change them, but the size isn't marked anywhere on them. I was wondering if anyone knew what size the standard piston or rings are. I miked the piston and I am getting 68.8 to 69mm is that the standard or is it oversized?

I'm the one that posted a week and a half ago about my bike running for a short distance and then dying. It wouldn't want to start back up after that. Here's what I've done/checked and what I've found out. I checked the voltage at 3000 rpms. It read 14.6 volts. I cleaned the fuel tank out w/ KBS coatings. The tank completely looks brand new. The petcock was full of crud. I cleaned it out. Then I cleaned out the carburetors. They were only dirty where the fuel lines run in. They were also full of crud. I cleaned them completely out. I can't put the fuel tank back on for two more days (it has to cure for a total of 4 days). Before I pulled the tank, I let…

Hi I am after a bit of help, the indicators on my 82 xt400 (grey import) will not work when the engine is running. They did work before I fitted a new battery, now they will only work with the ignition on and engine not running. Any ideas? Thanks Mark

i just picked up a 76 xs500 with about 17,000 miles and finding that when riding it and im stopped, it idles at 2500 or 3000RPMs. Is this normal or too high? Also, im noticing now that there seems to be a little white smoke that is visible when Im revving the engine thats coming from the right side exhaust only. When at idle, the white smoke is not visible. The left side exhaust doesnt have this problem. Is this an indication of a valve seal leak? Thanks.

Also I was wanting to know if anyone had a source for parts of this bike as I may need some if the time comes, I know I will need an key ignition since someone got rid of it. Thanks allot -John Also here is the ebay listing if you wanna check it out. 1975 xs500

Very new to the site, not sure if i am doing this right but here it goes. Anyone familar with 1983 vriago forks? I have a 920, near the top of the forks the is a bracket there that has an airvalve on the side of the fork on the clutch side, not where it should be, on top of the forks. there is a hose the runs under the neck to the other fork. I am sure it has to do with equalizing air in either fork. However the manuel is not showing this type of fork set up. does anyone know if this was stock. or am i looking at some ones modifications. and if so... I should be able to replace those forks with most any 36 mm forks....Right? Please help. thenks bulhead
